Fake UFO scripts & CDs on eBay...

Marc Martin
Administrator
Hi all,

I see we've got someone selling some more printouts
from my website on eBay...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2125886802
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2125889489

Even that Ed Bishop signature looks fake... :-/

Also a copy of the fan-made UFO soundtrack CD-R, incorrectly
described as if it was a real CD made in Japan:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1552417482

(although the names on the production credits don't look
Japanese to me...)

What, again? Is the a way to contact Ebay's management and tell them
to withdraw particular classes of doubtful offers, or to check them
with an expert before approving them?

Love those graphics on the cd. Really professional. I'm being sarcastic.

Somewhere else on ebay is a cd of SPACE:1999 season two themes which has a
picture of the disc...sitting on the guy's printer! You know, if you're
going to bootleg something you might not want to show the equipment on which
you created it!

I am afraid this one of the "joys" of free market. A few months ago I
published a book with an American publisher, which is available on
Amazon.com. The list price was $89.95. One of the Amazon Marketplace
sellers listed the book as a "collectible" and offered it for something
like $120, maybe more. Even if I was "flattered" by seeing my book
considered as a collectible three months after publication, I asked my
publisher about this issue, and the reply was that in the USA it is not
legal to cap prices: it was the buyers' responsibility to avoid getting
fooled.

As to experts controlling the market, ask Enron and World.com stockholders ...

Well, I think this is slightly different.

Here you are talking about a legitimate product being sold at a higher price.
This happens all the time in the US - Amazon.com sells DVDs for one price and
DeepDiscountDVD.com sells them for another (lower) price. Nothing wrong with
that, it's called "competition".

It's up to the buyer to research pricing and buy at the best price -- if
he/she desires of course. People choose to purchase things at higher/lower
prices for all sorts of reasons, but that's beyond the scope of this email. :)

What happened with Marc's stuff is a bit of a gray area --- the material
should be copywrited once it's posted/written down, no doubt about it. But, it
gets a little "gray" (in my opinion) when the material is off of a fan's Web
site.

I have contacted eBay in the past when I saw bootleg videos being sold and the
auctions did seem to end.

An email to the seller and concurrently to "Safe Harbor" might have put a halt
to it.

Of course, alerting people about this unethical practice via the UFO Web site
and/or this forum is also beneficial.
