Fan Fiction

Mark Davies-3
I have no objection to fan fiction being highlighted or discussed, although naturally I think it perfectly acceptable to be critical of its content.

I for example have my own parameters in respect of UFO and what I think is acceptable,so much of the fan fiction I hear about being written frightens me.The thought of cross overs for example makes me shudder.I am strictly Canon

Also UFO is a Television Series, not a piece of literature, and I always find that style of presentation very hard to identify with.
If it has to be written then make it feel cinematic, write it strictly in the third person and let the characters speak as if you were writing Television dialogue. If possible accompany the story with sketches or pictures that augment what is written.

Re: Fan Fiction

I agree that criticism of fanfiction is acceptable, but it does need to be based on the accuracy of the content and the grammar, rather than one's personal reaction to the storyline. Each writer has their own individual style, just as fans have their own preferences for episodes, actors, models etc. Some writers are not 'approved of' by a minority of readers.
There are several people who really, really object to my 'Alan' stories in the Thunderbirds site and who are personally abusive. If people don't like a particular style of writing, then they should know to avoid those stories.
I do not read Agatha Christie for example.
One other thing to consider. Fanfiction kept Star Trek alive for decades. Fanfiction is just another expression of people's love for a series that was all too short and yet still keeps us enthralled.
Oh yes.. and I do try to illustrate my stories.. just can't do everything at once!

On a diferent note.HELP! Amazon have just told me that they can not fulfillmy order for the Chris Bentley Complete UFO book. Rats. I've been waiting for months. Any idea where I can get it?

I've gotten items from FAB Gear, but I'm in the USA. You could also try
a "rare book search" on the various websites that hook up to booksellers
around the world. I just tried that, but it seems like some people are
charging an awful lot for what must be perceived as a collectors item.
I even saw someone selling this book for $9999. :-)

Thanks Everyone,. I've managed to get a second hand copy (I hope) from theUK,. Its a paperback and cost the earth, but it's my own fault. I should have ordered one last year and never bothered. Perhaps I'd better get the UFO CD from Fanderson soon in case they run out! I'd better sell some art work now!!
When I think of the full set of Countdown comics I threw away!!!!Thanks forhelping!

Great! It's too late now, but I think the hardback version is the
preferred version (updated, corrected, some color pages)

Yes, typically UFO merchandise is manufactured in small quantities
and is cheap when first released, but soon becomes unavailable and
"collectible".

Although, it seems that A&E made plenty of UFO DVDs for the USA market...

Fabgear is an ecxellent servise! I live in God-forsaken Bosnia and never failed to get my order, and in a surprisingly short timeframe...
Highly recommended!

All the best,

Re: Complete Book of UFO

Lightcudder
Thanks everyone! My second hand copy is in the post... If it is as good as people say it is, then I will probably treat myself and order a new hardback from Fabgear! One can never have too much of a good thing!
Now I need to save up! It's good to hear that so many people have found Fabgear reliable.
