Fanderson UFO CD arrives!

the_connoisseuruk
It finally popped through my
letterbox this morning. The
packaging was a bit on the thin
side, but it survived the rigour of
the Royal Mail. Looking at the case
it has a track listing of 27 titles
on both CDs:1.UFO-main theme.
2-6.IDENTIFIED. 7.Commercial break
sting 1. 8.Unidentified[alternative
score]. 9-13. SURVIVAL. 14-18.
EXPOSED. 19. Commercial break sting
2. 21-25. CONFLICT. 26.E.S.P.
27.UFO-End titles. CD2:1.UFO-Main
theme. 2-6. A QUESTION OF
PRORITIES.7-11. ORDEAL. 12-16. THE
SQUARE TRIANGLE. 17-21. CONFETTI
CHECK A.O.K. 22.Straker's
theme[alternative cue].23-24. THE
LONG SLEEP. No listing of 25-26 on
case! 27. UFO-End titles. CD 1
running time:78:35. CD 2 running
time:76:33. Excuse me now while I
spend the rest of the day in aural
heaven!

It is cool to see/hear that at least they have included some of Barry
Gray original mono mixes. The disc art work is cool, and in my opinion
would have perhaps made better cover art.

I think they probably included some mono mixes because they had no other
choice -- there were no stereo mixes available for some of the tracks.

So are the stereo mixes faithful to the originals?

Partly, but the liner notes also make mention that some were included
in deference to the original sound particulary the opening an closing
signitures.

In my opinion the remixes are generally OK [it's nice to see that the
liner notes do admit to the stereo versions being as being remixes]
with no overt remixing that makes you think it particulary different
for difference sake. Although there are occasions it sounds a little
gimmicky and the bass is a bit washed out in places. But, that has
perhaps more to to do with the nature of late sixties stereo [ie the
nature of the beast] and being less familiar with stereo versions
rather anything else. The sonic reproduction is of a high standard
throughout with some nice top end definition. This would have been by
and large missing from the original Tv transnissions [and probably the
DVD's if they used the original sound mags] as the sound would have
been compressed to suit the frequency range of early 70's television.

Generally it is a very nice product, the booklet is crammed with nice
colour photo's. Although my booklet was a little jammed into to jewel
case, leading to it being a little creased.

We are certainly far better off with this set, than without out and I
recommend it.

With or without the sound effects?

Hello
My copy also arrived yesterday. All in all very pleased with it - of course
we're all familiar with the music, but the quality of the remastering is
superb. Some of the tracks (I've only had chance to listen to part of CD1 on
my way to work today, I've been in Hammond Heaven) are in mono - sadly they
comprise the score to the first episode, and therefore are some of the most
familiar pieces. However, regardless of whether they were meant to be heard
in stereo, the stereo tracks really allow the balance of the instruments to
be heard. The title tracks have been included in both stereo and mono,
presumably after some complaints over the Space 1999 yr 2 which said the
mixing wasnt very faithful.
I couldnt discern any sound effects on the

Even though I haven't received my Fanderson UFO CD yet, I'm
sure that it is an excellent product, and a "must have" item.
So I hope people don't think my comments are in some way
intended to slam the product. It's just that this is a discussion
group, and it seems like a legitimate thing to discuss.

As for the mono mixes being lost, I know this is not true,
because I picked up a bootleg double CD soundtrack of UFO
a few months ago, and the whole thing is in mono! You can
even listen to a few tracks on my "music" page and compare
them to Fanderson's stereo versions if you like. On the
bootleg, there are certainly tracks which have nasty tape dropouts
on them which would probably render them unusable, although
if Fanderson was sucessful in using the same types of sources for
IDENTIFIED and THE LONG SLEEP, then they certainly could
have used them for other episodes as well.

It's just interesting to note the decisions that went into
making this CD. Fanderson obviously decided that the stereo
versions were prefered, and the mono versions should only
be used as a last resort. I'm sure that most fans
are happy with that decision. However, if I was the one
putting this CD together, I think I would have used the
original mono mixes whenever possible, and as a last resort
use the 4-track masters to try to recreate a new mono mix.
Also, I think I would have tried to make it a 3 disc release
instead of 2.
