Hi All,
I see that the Fanderson eGroup description has been updated at: http://www.egroups.com/group/fanderson It now says that this group will be open in mid August, is for Fanderson members only, and will be initially used to publish news and gather information via polls. The way they will test to see if you are a Fanderson member is to check your eGroup profile & compare it with the membership database. I wonder if there is an alternative method... I'm not too thrilled about having to put my mailing address online just to get subscribed to this group... And I can already hear the upcoming complaints about the "members only" philosophy... :-) -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |

Some of these places want your phone number, address, social security number - forget it! <gawk> I think eBay requires a credit card number now. When I joined, it wasn't required, but I think it is now - seems like I tried to edit my profile and it demanded a credit card number, so I left it as it was ...... It's just a matter of time before I get ripped off somehow via the Internet <siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh> Anyhow, eGroups seems okay to me, so I don't mind the FAB-UFO move. Although, I think eGroups requires some personal info too, don't they? Maybe it was my eGroups profile I wanted to edit but it required some info I was unwilling to give, so I left it as it was - Onelist didn't require such persoanl info ........... <grrrrrrrrrrrr> -- Y -- =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Yuchtar zantai-Klaan | [hidden email] I am not a number! Hi Marc.
You'll notice that the Fanderson eGroup blurb has been updated once again following your comments. Obviously, we don't want everyone to advertise all their personal details to the world, but we do want to ensure that the eGroup serves our club members, hence the need to check eGroups profiles against the membership database. So, as a minimum, we will want to check: - your name - your postcode - your Fanderson membership number in the "remarks" field This is all information that we already hold on each of our members, so it's not asking for anything new, nor should it breach anyone's desire for anonymity on eGroups. I hope that this change shows that we are constantly listening, and changing/improving with the intention of serving our members better. In anticipation of any complaints about our "members only" philosophy, I'd like to point out that Fanderson is a club, for paid-up members, and it is the generosity and devotion of these members that has enabled us to release some really fantastic merchandise to the world recently. Merchandise that wouldn't have seen the light of day if left to commercial companies for whom the return wouldn't have justified the outlay. Instead, our membership fees enable us to undertake risky projects (such as the soundtrack CDs) whilst still offering a valuable membership package. The Fanderson eGroups list is intended initially for us to broadcast breaking news to our members, and to gather information on topics for which we need a swift response. For example, before setting up the credit/debit card facility, it was imperative that we were sure that enough members would use it to make it financially viable. Unfortunately, this required the sending and processing of hundreds of paper-based questionnaires, whereas with eGroups the whole process will be much easier. It is our hope that all of our on-line club members will subscribe to this service once it becomes operational with FAB40. Nick Williams, Fanderson memebrship secretary and treasurer PS - has the FAB-L list also moved to eGroups, or just shut down altogether? --- In [hidden email], Marc Martin <marcmartin@u...> wrote: > Hi All, > > I see that the Fanderson eGroup description has been updated at: > > http://www.egroups.com/group/fanderson > > It now says that this group will be open in mid August, is for > Fanderson members only, and will be initially used to publish > news and gather information via polls. > > The way they will test to see if you are a Fanderson member is > to check your eGroup profile & compare it with the membership > database. Hi Nick,
Thanks for the reply! I agree that putting only my name, postcode, and Fanderson membership number into my eGroups profile is not objectionable... my main concern was with my street address, which I'm relieved to see you don't require. As for my "members only" comment, please note that I wasn't complaining myself (why should I, since I'm a member!), but every once and a while I see these sorts of complaints on mailing lists... ( usually the Space:1999 list -- they like to complain about everything... ;-) ) I also agree about the wonderful products that Fanderson has produced -- those soundtrack CD's in recent years have been fabulous! By the way, is there anything we can do to speed up the release of a UFO soundtrack CD? :-) Also, I was wondering (I don't know if you know the answer to this, Nick) if any more Fanderson script booklets are planned? As far as I know, Fanderson has only issued 2 UFO script transcripts to its members (IDENTIFIED & TIMELASH), although it is my understanding that Fanderson has original UFO scripts for all 26 episodes! I've spent a considerable amount of effort myself trying to track down original UFO scripts, and have managed to find & put transcriptions of 12 of them on my UFO website, but unfortunately that's all I have. So if Fanderson is not planning on ever releasing those other 14 scripts to its membership, perhaps I could beg/plead/bribe someone into getting copies so that fans around the world could finally have a chance to read them? As for FAB-L, we'll have to ask Kim what she plans on doing with this list (Kim? Are you here?). I know that the person who used to keep all of the PIPEX list runnings *is* trying to get all of them running on a different server. It's just that FAB-UFO has defected, and for better or worse, we're now on eGroups. -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |
I knew you weren't complaining, Marc. As far as I can remember you're
always supportive of what we're trying to do. To respond to your queries: 1) there's not really anything that can be done at the moment to help get more soundtracks off the ground. With the runaway success of both Fireball XL5 and Space:1999 albums, we know that people are champing at the bit for the rest! Although people generally cite Thunderbirds and UFO as top of the list of "wants", I have to say that Joe 90 has some really beautiful music. The clarity from the master recordings is stunning, although this is sadly lost on some people. You may remember people on the Space:1999 list moaning that the Year Two CD didn't sound the same as when on TV. Of course it doesn't!! It's clean, it's in stereo, it's not compressed to buggery and coming out of a 2 inch speaker!! Sorry, starting to rant, there. Anyway, whether we can progress with more soundtrack albums rests with the copyright holders, who we are in negotiations with. Having said that, there are limited resources available, and we've got to decide which to do next (after Terrahawks, which has been on the back burner for a couple of years now). Things like the eGroups polls may help us make such decisions in the future. 2) more script books are definitely in the pipeline, but again it's down to resources, although it's not money this time. Books are relatively easy for us to produce, but time consuming in getting the script typed up. Sadly, very few of our members (and I can usually count them on one hand) ever offer to help. Occasionally someone does offer help, and it's a runaway success - take the mini-metal models, for example. Now, if someone was to offer an absolutely reliable letter-for-letter transcription of the original script which we could then format into a book, the job would be much, much easier. Some (most? all?) of the transcriptions that Marc has were transcribed by fellow fab-ufo list members. I did SUBSMASH, for example. I takes a lot of work, so I'm not surprised you have had few offers from Fanderson members. Perhaps if you offered them something like a years free membership and a "thank you" in the actual book, you may get a better response? Marc's "payment" to me was a photocopy of the *original* script, and a mention on his web site, which I was more than happy with. Regards -- Rob |

Ummm, I'm a member of Fanderson and while I live in the nether regions of Scotland, I am here to help with typing. <BIG HINT> -- SuzannEd Sutherland |
