Hello everyone,
I think I was about 13 when I first saw UFO. It was 1972 and the Moon Landings were winding down. I'd grown up with other Gerry Anderson shows, Supercar, Stingray, Fireball XL-5 and Thunderbirds but this was something different. At that age I was attracted to the action and gadgets ( and I still am to a degree), later on as I had a chance to read the novels I became interested in the characters. In 1977 I joined SHADO-USCC, a UFO/ Ed Bishop Fan Club that was endorsed by Mr. Bishop and our membership cards had his signature even. I rediscovered UFO and UFO Fandom along with Space:1999. Although I never met Ed I always heard good things about him and was saddened to hear about him and Michael Billington passing away. The show still looks good after all these years and the technology used for 1980 wasn't that far off base. I think tape based magnetic storage was still being used in computers back then and a lot of engineers were still using slide rules. It's good to be a part of the group and start reliving some good times. Brian Blank Melbourne, Florida Gateway to Space |

In fact, the lady who founded it (and who passed away in the late 70s-early 80s, as I recall) was kind enough to send me an open-reel audio tape of the theme, which I always thought was one of the coolest themes ever. I no longer have any of the material, but I do recall one piece of fan fiction that had Mr. Spock in an Enterprise shuttle landing on earth and running afoul of SHADO, and another in which Straker was sealed into one of those black tubes. The tube that the character 'Russ' was sealed into was actually grey, with at least one end (we don't see the other end) a chartreuse color. My reference to photon torpedo tubes resulted from this passage in your earlier post:
"I do recall one piece of fan fiction that had Mr. Spock in an Enterprise shuttle landing on earth and running afoul of SHADO, and another in which Straker was sealed into one of those black tubes." I made the erroneous assumption that BOTH pieces of fan fiction mentioned were crossovers with Star Trek, instead of just one of them. Sorry for the confusion. The funny thing about the tube they put that guy in in "Sound Of Silence".... It looked like a canister of Aluminum like metal, claimed very advanced technology by the characters in the room, and with walls that looked like they were 3 inches thick. You expected them to be using a powered drilling or hole cutting device to cut into it....yet what do they use?.... A guy turning a wood hole cutting tool, by hand, that is only about an inch deep. It's funny to watch him pull out that 3 inch deep core cutting out of the side of the casing, attached to the end of that little 1 inch deep cutting tool. ---------------------------------------------------------- ----- Original Message ----- From: Jeffrey Nelson To: [hidden email] Sent: Friday, February 09, 2007 7:18 AM Subject: Re: [SHADO] Re: Finding UFO again The tube that the character 'Russ' was sealed into was actually grey, with at least one end (we don't see the other end) a chartreuse color. I had always found that amusing, too. If it was so hi-tech, why did the walls need to be so thick? I too wondered how they got a 3 inch thick cutting with the tool they were using. But their rationale for using a hand-operated cutter (I'd have to check the episode) was probably to minimize vibrations, as they thought it might be some sort of explosive device. So at least THAT much makes some sort of sense.
