Yes, though his name was Brian Johncock at the time. And the Moonbus
from 2001 looks absolutely nothing like the Moon hopper from UFO. AT Brian Lindstrand wrote: > > Didn't Brian Johnson work on 2001? I think urban myth is creeping in here, although it has been long
assumed that there was a strong Anderson connection with 2001, most of it is pretty tenous stuff - there was no cross over of any significance, period. I believe a couple of the model techie's may have moved across from Anderson to Kubrick - but that's about it. There is a tale that Kubrick did try to coerce more of Anderson special effects team into the 2001 stable, but this was [understandbly] balked by the Andersons. It should be remembered Kubrick started serious work on 2001 early in 1964 with principle shooting commencing [if my memory serves me right] 2nd Jan 1965 ! Marc is quite right 2001 was in the cinemas nearly a full year before shooting started on UFO started, so there was very little, if no chance of any on set cross over between the two productions. As regards 2001 props turning up on UFO, that is highly unlikey as Kubrick had all the special effects models and props from 2001 purposely destroyed and expressly forbad and use of clips of 2001 being used as stock footage in other movies - in a effort to prevent "his" masterpiece being cheapened. I believe this was brought about when Kubrick saw someone walking across the studio lot with the model of the the B-52 from Strangelove, inquiring were it was been taken, he was told it was being [re]used on an other film. From that point in time Kubrick instructed that all models used on his movies be destroyed upon completion of the movie. I have to stay apart from the general principle of flying close to the lunar surface I see very little simularity between the 2001 Moonbus and the SHADO Moon-mobile. Although, one of the 2001 space suits did survive Kubricks rout, I'm far from convinced it was re-used in UFO. All those that interested in what happened to [some of]the models from 2001 should point there browser at the following link: www.visual-memory.co.uk/f...ation.html It is sobering, but extremely interesting story on that page, especially the images of the derlict model of the Space Station V laying in the grass being left to the vandals. Hello Yuchtar :)
I've been on this list for a few years now (gulp :) ...and in all that time, I cannot remember for the life of me reading what it is exactly about the ahem... film in question (phew - think I got away with it) that you do not like (understatement!). I am sure you must have (once) stated it for the record, but for the benefit of those such as myself, and for those otherwise in danger of succumbing to a similar fate (such as our esteemed list owner and moderator) ... please can you elucidate? ...and please make it good, as I get the feeling one does not get to ask this more than once in a lifetime ;) ...and er... what is the protocol here? could we refer to the film using symbols (say MMI ...to be rather Roman) Mmmm.... Prince had loads of problems once he adopted a symbol, on the other hand he didn't ever get flamed by Yuchtar??? Well, I don't think he did... mmm... he hasn't done a whole lot lately, has he???? And that is how it should be called - The Two Movie. <ahem> > Griff :) > > ps. Well, it does say 'Yuchtar, the friendly Klingon' as your postscript ;) Oh, But I am! <big toothy grin> No, I had never seen it at theatres and since Ed was in it and everyone went on about what a GREAT film it was, I rented it. The first reason I don'tlike it and don't like Kubrick is, he cut most of Ed's scenes and ALL of his dialog. The other reason I hate the film is **IT PUT ME TO SLEEP** I don't care how great the fx are, if I'm sleeping through it, so what? I nodded off right after Ed's scene and woke up with damned HAL singing freakin' Daisy! HATE that film. <grrrrrrr> (And, no, I wasn't particularly sleepy when I tried to watch it) On the other hand, I did like Lolita and even watched it three times trying to find Ed! THEN there was Saturn 3. LOL! I rented that too, cuz Ed was in it. Well, all-in-all, it's not a BAD film, but Ed is in it for all of 3 seconds, he is completely covered by some huge helmet and has only one line, AND! I was NOT entirely prepared to see Kirk Douglas' nekkid butt <shudder shudder> Marc got a big laugh out of that, cuz I had announced that I had rented Saturn 3 and was going to make an evening of it and the next day, he was rolling with laughter cuz he KNEW about Ed's tiny part and Kirk's nekkid butt. <shaking head> I am soooooo abused round here. -- Y {{:-) -- =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+= Yuchtar zantai-Klaan | [hidden email] I am not a number! Hi All :)
Thanks to Yuchtar for the clarification on the protocol and reasoning for her "Two Movie" issues. I 'think' I understand now ;) ...I have to say - at the risk of being flamed - that I quite liked it, and it holds a special place in my DVD collection, as much for the evolvement of the story by Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick, and special effects by Doug Trumbell et al, and for just sheer coolness... admittedly dialogue is a little bland, but I don't mind :) BTW! I just remembered that Prince did a song called 1999... I wonder if he is a UFO fan as well ;) Best to all, Griff ps. Although I love UFO and everything about it, am a great admirer of Ed Bishop and all the actors in UFO... ...you mentioned "Ed's tiny part and Kirk's nekkid butt." ...Okay slightly out of context... ...and respect to Ed, BUT it completely put me off my Cherrios... UGH Thanks a lot ;) |

Hi All :)
I received my complete set of Konami UFO models today from Comet Miniatures. They sure look nice on one of the shelves in my office. Also, they are really well made and beautifully finished, hard to believe they were 'just' models supplied with candy - although admittedly, they are the most expensive candy I have ever bought... bar none!!! The only trouble is, being plastic they must give off an attractive odour, or maybe its the smell from the little packet of candy that came with each one, but our cats just will not leave them alone, either that or they are UFO fans and are trying to play with them! Mmm... well, when UFO is being played on the TV they all do seem to settle down - except for "The Cat With Ten Lives" - What on earth did they do to that poor cat? Mine go completely ape when they hear that! My girlfriend Sabbie gets really upset as well... ooops. Sorry if I'm off topic... been away on biz... which episode are we on? Best, Griff |
where were these models released, and has anyone got pics of them?

Hi!
The Konami candy models were released (I believe) later last year, and have been discussed at length on this list. You can get them from Comet Miniatures at http://cometminiatures.com/index.asp Hope this helps. Griff ps. I could upload some pics to the SHADO site, although I am sure someone has already done this. -----Original Message----- From: David Richards [mailto:[hidden email]] Sent: Wednesday, February 19, 2003 7:59 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [SHADO] Konami UFO models where were these models released, and has anyone got pics of them? |
