Future Ed Straker?

Griff
Hi All :)

...and wishing you all a Happy, Peaceful and Prosperous New Year.

Let's face it. No one is going to be able to be more Straker than Ed
Bishop. Ed Bishop bought something to the character that even Gerry
and Sylvia Anderson hadn't foreseen as they've said themselves. Ed
Bishop is Straker. No matter who it was, they would never be able to
replace Straker in the minds of true UFO fans.

However, I think Ed Harris would make the most believable, mature Ed
Straker. He is one of those actors that you forget is acting. He's
tough, plausible, has integrity, authority, and was fantastic in the
Abyss, The Right Stuff, The Truman Show etc. Although the younger
actors mentioned are great, I've always thought of Straker as a mature
character, and needs someone as such. It would need someone like Ed
Harris to carry off the part... he also has blue eyes, I believe?

Best to all :)

Ed Harris, first good suggestion I've heard.

My best choice for a live actor would be George Peppard....problem is you'd need a time machine to bring him back from 1969.... :-(
Have you ever seen him in "Operation Crossbow"?, such a Strakerish lookalike....

Frankly, the best way to do UFO & keep the authenticity would be to use computer generated characters like they did in Final Fantasy. Use scans of the original actors.

As long as your have sky blue eyes the ladies will love you.

I hate having to fight off the women, I'm actually having to carry a

But, hey, that doesn't make any difference these days!

I do like the idea of Ed Harris - can we get him a blonde wig to cover up that shiny spot? Question: how tall WAS Ed Bishop? Pam the Canuck

Haven't heard of a remake of Day The Earth Stood Still and if there is one - I suspect the producers will find someone more...ahem....suitable, shall we say, to play Rennie's part. However, could we hire Ah-nie to play Gort? Pam the Canuck

And this is precisely my problem. I think of Straker, I see Ed
Bishop. Trying to put another face on Straker is roughly impossible
for me.

And, yeah, we know you like Ed Harris for the role. :-)

It's up on IMDb and it's said to be in production. My

this one for months.

Yes, there is a new "Day The Earth Stood Still"

James Finch
In reply to this post by Pam McCaughey-2
Yes, it's true. A visit from NEO himself. Oh well, I will probably go see it anyway, even though the original could never be upstaged. I have the original on DVD and to this day, the story still gives me chills and Rennie was perfect for the role. In fact, his many sci-fi oriented appearances after that movie kind of immortalized him in the minds of baby boomer science fiction enthusiasts as an icon. Keanu is no Rennie, but I still like the guy, especially in the Matrix. I have an open mind to this new version even though I know no one could ever eclipse the original movie.

Here is the imdb.com link:

Hi All :)

I believe Ed Bishop was 5' 11". I believe Ed Harris is a few notches
less than that. But, they always seem able to make Tom Cruise seem
about 6' tall, I think of myself as short, and yet I'm taller than him...

S'truth, are they really remaking the "Day the Earth stood still"?...
I know it's a bit unfair saying this without even having seen their
version premise, preparation or film to be, but given the current
genre or film-making, I can pretty much imagine what we're in for...

S'thruth, next they'll be remaking "Forbidden Planet", with Keanu
Reeves as Robbie the Robot!

It's enough to make a grown man cry.

Best to all

Griff

Awesome! I've long thought that was a suitable candidate for a remake. Brilliant
film.

Is he the one?

Rob Neal
In reply to this post by Marc Martin
I wouldn't worry about that Marc, Keanu Reeves cant act either, and
that never stopped him.

So he plays some guy in a black coat with a broomstick up his a**
(insert film here: Johnny Mnemonic/Matrix series/Constantine/Scanner
etc etc) The man has all the acting ability of a lump of 4x2.

I hear he is in the remake of "The Day the Earth Stood Still" - I
thought this was a bad idea, but then he would be perfect to play
Gort, the robot. No dialogue, and stiff as a board.. ;o)

He is too young to play such a character as Ed Straker.Don't get me wrong, but you have to have a certain kind of Pinache to headline and take on that role.I mentioned before about the people who should play the roles of our favorite chacracters;Jennifer Ellison as Lt.Gay Ellis she would definitely fit the chacracter and play the roll of a lifetime if there were ever to bea movie or series to come out.But that my own opinion.

Yeah George Peppard would have been a good Straker, pugnacity, looks, voice and smoked. Ed Harris (with wig) isn't a bad idea either. I haven't been watching the new BG so I'll have to look at it to see the actor mentioned as a candidate. I also thought the idea of doing the characters a la Final Fabtasy was an interesting concept! It's bad eough that a remake is being done of TDTESS but NOT Forbidden Planet - puh-leeese! I felt Leslie Nielsen was a quintessential starship commander (next to Kirk of course) - but I could be highly prejudiced - both Shatner and Nielsen are Canadians! Pam the Canuck
