Yes.. I've always like George Peppard as an actor, but more for things
like Banacek rather than the A-Team.. Definitely fits the Straker role as an Ed Bishop replacement... although in fairness, would the character HAVE to look like Ed Bishop.. there are plenty of fine actors who could take on the role.. I think the white hair would have to be kept in though.. Ed Harris (with wig) isn't a bad idea either. I haven't been watching the new BG so I'll have to look at it to see the actor mentioned as a candidate. I also thought the idea of doing the characters a la Final Fabtasy was an interesting concept! It's bad eough that a remake is being done of TDTESS but NOT Forbidden Planet - puh-leeese! I felt Leslie Nielsen was a quintessential starship commander (next to Kirk of course) - but I could be highly prejudiced - both Shatner and Nielsen are Canadians! Ah, but if we'd resurrect George Peppard to be
Straker, why not go for the real deal? I'm fairly sure that Ed Bishop is a choice we all could endorse. Diorite --- John <[hidden email]> wrote: > Yes.. I think UFO could use a revitalization much like BGS... not quite so drastic, but darker and edgier.

I've tried twice now to get into the new BG and can't seem to form an interest in it. I can agree with George's posting on making a 'new' UFO edgier and darker (I've already been thinking that way with alot of my fanfic), but I hope if this ever comes to pass, whoever is at the helm of a remake will do a better job. I was never a big fan of the original BG, but I can also say that I won't be a fan of the 'new and improved' BG - just from what I've seen. Is it me, or does the story seem to move very s-l-o-w-l-y? Any remake of UFO has hopefully to be appealing to the original fans (who are the real audience to aim for here) and updated enough to garner new fans. As I posted earlier, the major flaw in Thunderbirds was aiming the film at the wrong demographic. BTW, anyone notice a cameo role in the new BG by Richard Hatch (Apollo in the old BG)? I'm not a fan of the new Battlestar Galactica either. Seems too much like a sci-fi soap opera to me. I guess it's been quite popular with others, though, so what do I know? Just not my cup of tea. I like the newer Dr. Who much better.

Hi Jeffrey - I have not as yet seen the 'new' Dr. Who. I liked the original tho. I have to agree with you that the new BG seems soap opera-ish in nature. This is NOT what I want for UFO if it ever was to be remake as a feature or even as a series. Another thing I find strange about the new BG - the sets, clothing are all 20th century earth-like and everyone is wearing glasses - I thought in the future we'd be done with such things? I don't see much that's sci-fic about this show. So I'm hoping if UFO IS updated, they'll take it into the 21st century and things will 'look' better as well. I write alot about ultra-modern and specialized hardware, up to date or even tweaked-out computer equipment, et al in my fanfic. In fact I created a new part of SHADO, alluded to but never named on the series, which is the MIB branch - they clean up alien sites and keep people who've had close encounters from remembering what they saw etc. I called that branch the Omega Corporation, and its public persona is as an up and coming computer company, almost as powerful as Microsoft, and making enough money selling its products, to finance itself, since SHADO is likely financed from the black budgets of alot of countries, or at least we get that hint from some of the original UFO eps. Maybe I'm just jaded.
I can see some space opera elements in BSG, but I wouldn't label it a sci-fi soap opera. The stories do tend to move slowly at times, but it's more about the people rather than the sci-fi elements. I can forgive break downs in special effects and sometimes continuity, as long as there's a good story with the people involved. Ronald Moore (who's one of the show runners for BSG) is all about the people stories. He wrote the better episodes of the Star Trek: The Next Generation and the bulk of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Richard Hatch plays a former terrorist turned political leader (I think he's the Vice President of the survivors now). And I'm a HUGE fan of the new Dr. Who stuff (I grew up watching Tom Baker). For my money, it just cast an emphasis on the "human element" and
kept it from being just a simple "shoot-em-up" space opera. And a tad more OT...there is a new channel on cable, on Charter Cable it's ch. 137, called American Life and on Thursday nites it features Time Tunnel, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Lost in Space and Land of the Giants, all classic scifi fare. Happy New Year, all! Mark T. |
