While you're on the subject of sound effects, can you tell me how the effect is made of the UFO itself? It always sounds so creepy, like someone trying to whisk the side of a steel dish in slow motion !!
All thre Best, BRIAN ----- Forwarded Message ---- From: griffwason <[hidden email]> To: [hidden email] Sent: Wed, 10 March, 2010 12:11:45 Subject: [SHADO] Jet Engine recordings used in UFO Hi All, Does anyone know or have definitive information about the jet engine recordings used for Sky1, Seagull X-Ray, SHADair transporter, etc. sound effects in UFO. I am sure I years ago (can't remember where) that John Peveril and Peter Pennell recorded 'live' jet engine recordings of aircraft taxiing, take offs and landings at an RAF base 'somewhere'. .. Some of the jet sounds in UFO sound as if they came from older series such as Thunderbirds, but on very close listening some are unique to UFO. I would be really interested to know: - Where - Which aircraft types (I have my own theories) Also, the engine and 'drive' sounds of the SHADO Mobile are indistinguishable (in my opinion) from a MK5 Centurion Tank, I could be wrong of course, but I had a tank driving bash recently (how tio turn a field into a bomb site in 30 minutes), and the sound of one going past 'struck' me straight away... the sound of course, not the tank... /-) Thanks very much :) Regards, Griff [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
Hi Brian,
I was an early UFO con (80's), and it was mentioned that Barry Gray createdthe sound for the UFO. If I recall correctly, it involved a number of mixed-down tape loops. I also believe a child's spinning top was one of the recordings in one of the loops. If you listen carefully to some of the UFO sequences, you can clearly hear that. Someone else on this list may know more... Hope this helps, Griff --- In [hidden email], Brian Serridge <brianserridge@...> wrote: > > While you're on the subject of sound effects, can you tell me how the effect is made of the UFO itself? Ooops, that came out bad...

I've been trying to source a lot of TV21 sound effects for years. Most of it, like elevator doors, gunshots, etc were stock ATV stuff, and used from Stingray onwards, but some were done specifically for the shows. I seem to remember something about the aircraft being recorded at an airbase, and a Hawker Hunter and Vampire jets being used, but don't quote me on that. (The Thunderbird 2 engines have been used all over the place). The tank noises were definitely Centurion, and you hear them used as the sound of "The Mole" in Thunderbirds, and then every tracked vehicle from then on. All the electronic sounds were made by Barry Gray, often using the old edited tape technique called "Musique Concrete" with lots of snippets spliced together, reversed, echoed and sped up / slowed down. There is also use of the Ondes Martenot and Theremin in some phrases.(The Interceptor Launch music on the CD's uses it, that eerie wailing note that scoops up and down). Also the end titles has a fair mixture of "reprocessed" cymbals, organ and vibraphone mixed with other electronics. The UFO sounds were also Barry's concoctions, but I have no idea how they were achieved. (I for one would LOVE to know!) Incidentally, I did mention about Harry Stoneham's Hammond the other week, but I was slightly wrong, it was a C3, not a B3 (Essentially the same thing, but a C3 has a surround, not just legs like the B3) - Also I believe Barry Gray owned an electronic organ of some description, at a guess, probably a Farfisa by the sound of it. This was used in some of the incidental stuffthroughout (like 'Unidentified'). If anyone is interested, I have an old article by Barry Gray about sound editing from a TV21 Annual if anyone wants me to scan and post it. Hope that fills a few gaps for you audio geeks! Hey Rob,
That's fantastic! Thanks ever so... this kind of stuff is REALLY important to me. You got it bang on with the Vampire and Hawker Hunter, they were #1 one on my list when I did comparison recordings - that whistling sound in particular is peculiar to the Vampire (DH Goblin Turbojet). My other recordings show that the Meteor using earlier Whittle W2/700 (now called W.2B/23 Welland turbojet)- was very likely in some recordings, and possibly an F104 Starfighter in a very few instances. The Centurion is an absolute certainty in my book. The engine and tracks sounds are identical with a MK4 or possibly MK5. I would LOVE to see that article if possible.
