Maybe I'll get lynched for this, but the one thing Straker certainly didn'thave was charisma. They'll be out with the handbags now - ooh, sexist!!! How about the bloke who played Robert Thorn in the remake of "The Omen"? He had as much charisma as a packet of dried garden slugs. Perfect for the part.

You're a bloke Brian. Many blokes don't 'get' charisma. Sex appeal, yes, Charisma ....maybe.
What it still comes down to is that Straker was the main character in the series. Without him the whole series would have fallen apart. UFO continued without Freeman, Ellis. Ford etc and may well have continued for further series if things had worked out.(And anyone who talks about 'wooden acting' is taking refuge in that cliched comment that is usually made by people who can't think for themselves!) If the producers of UFO want to have a successful UFO film, then they have to base the film on the original series. Otherwise they might as well call it 'Oh Look...there's something up there in the Sky'! Just as they should have called the Thinderbirds film; Alan Tracy-SchoolBoy Hero! Personally, I've never found the character of Straker to be particularly charismatic, either.
And on a somewhat different subject, I've never thought of Ed Bishop as being all tat handsome, either. Certainly not homely, but no Michael Billigton, either. I also thought Ed Bishop looked better in his Strakerwig than he did with his natural 'hairdo', at least in the times UFO was filmed. The wig definitely fit in well with the fashions. Well, as everyone else is on this subject...
I STILL think that Ed Harris would be the best Straker after Ed Bishop. He certainly has charisma, is GREAT at portraying leading roles: Apollo 13, The Abyss, The Right Stuff, The Truman Show, etc. etc... Okay, he's on the senior side, and is nearly bald, but if the producers' ofthe new movie are taking a hint from Century 21 Fashions, by wearing a 'piece' as in Apollo 13, I think he'd make a fantastic Straker. He's about theonly actor I can think of in the current actor line-up who has ANY authority at all - and that after all is what Straker was all about. As with "The Abyss", he can portray a certain vulnerability when needed... ...his face looks vaguely like the 'Real' Ed Bishop Straker. No. I agree with you whole heartedly. It seems to be the trend with remaking of old (or any) TV series, they never follow the original premise and totally loose the plot. I sit there and scratch my head and wonder how? I did hear a rumor, some years ago now, that they were going to remake 'Blakes 7', but it fell through because they wanted to change things, which ment compromising the original premise.
I had a look at Neil McDonough's page on IMDB, and apart from the fact thathe just looks a little creepy, his screen credits don't say much to me either. He might look vagely like Straker, but looks aren't everything. I agree with Griff, Ed Harris would seem to make a better Straker. Does he needto be blonde? If a person had the presence what he looks like shouldn't matter. IMHO ;-) Nat ________________________________ From: Lightcudder <[hidden email]> To: [hidden email] Sent: Wed, 14 April, 2010 2:13:27 AM Subject: Re: Fw: [SHADO] Neil McDonough as Ed Straker You're a bloke Brian.
