Fw: [SHADO] Re: UK UFO DVD limited editions available again?

Brian Serridge
I have the Carlton UK Region 2 boxed sets of UFO. Do the Region 1 sets differ in any way? I've heard that they contain Easter Eggs but I can't access them. There was something called "singing SID" whatever that is (?). Does anyone remember the UFO VHS releases from the 90s? They contained 2 to 3 episodes and were VERY expensive at around £8.00 a tape. I was glad to see the back of videotape (I'm sure I wasn't the only one). DVDs were terribly overpriced for a number of years, but I think the companies realise now that there is a price threshold that people won't cross. I love picking up films from Asda for £2 to £3 max, but once they creep up to a fiver I just chill.

All The Best,

BRIAN

After alerting Marc about it, I found out that it is only the first boxset with Vol. 1-4 that is somehow available directly from Amazon UK; what is strange is that ITV Studios Home Entertainment is listed as the release studio, maybe they found some old Carlton stock somewhere. However, its interesting the 2nd boxset is seemingly available as new also from various Amazon UK affiliated sellers. Mine was shipped yesterday, will update as soon as I receive it.

The Region 1 (A&E USA) UFO DVDs have two additional commentary tracks
that the UK sets do not -- Mike Billington/Alan Perry on KILL STRAKER,
and Sylvia Anderson/Wanda Ventham on TIMELASH. There may be a few
other extras... the "singing SID" was an outtake from IDENTIFIED.
In the original script, the Moonbase commander was male, and as a
hobby was teaching SID to sing. They actually recorded Mel Oxley
singing "Home on the Range" for this, and this is what that extra
feature is.

And (obviously) the menus and packaging are different.  Also, don't the UK versions play slightly faster than the region 1 discs, thus altering the pitch of the actor's voices, whereas the region 1's play at the correct speed?

Yes, although the Ed Bishop/Gerry Anderson commentary tracks play too
slowly on the A&E discs, making them seem a bit sleepy/drugged....

I think those are ported over to Australian release, which is good one to have for menitoning Marc prominently ; )

Am I credited on the Australian UFO DVD release? I did help a bit on the
A&E release, but I don't think I got any credit.

Interesting.  I never thought about the Gerry Anderson/Ed Bishop commentaries playing too slowly.  I'll have to check them out again.  Thanks, Marc!  And the Aussie version has a commentary by George Sewell that both the UK and A&E lack, correct?

Yes, the Aussie version has a George Sewell "interview" (as opposed
to a straight commentary) for ESP, and also has a commentary on
PSYCHOBOMBS featuring the actress who played Linda Simmons
(Deborah Grant) and the guy who was in charge of the UFO film to
video mastering (Jonathan Wood). That last commentary is
actually one of the better ones! So the Australian set is the
"ultimate" version, as it has *all* of the commentaries
(although ISOSHADO has recorded some of their own commentary
tracks featuring some of their guests that have never been
released)

Sigh.  It looks like I definitely need to invest in the Aussie set, then.  For anyone in the States that hasn't bought the A&E version yet, they can be had brand new for $25US including shipping for the Megaset on Amazon.
