Don't even go there... aliens in sci-fi (ie TV/film SF) do tend to be very
paradoxical: they are very clever when it comes to technology, very dumb
when it comes to solving their own problems (let's face it: there are an
awful lot of "dying planets" out there for which ours always provides the
perfect solution...)

One of the things to keep in mind is that later in the series another theory
for the aliens attacking Earth was proposed -- so it may not have been solely
for the organ transplants.

I think the basis for the dying planet is that the aliens put all thier energy into industries that destroyed natural resources which lead to their bodies rejecting new organs. They found a solution but it was too late. Just my opinion. bsl
