Fw: [SHADO] Sylvia Anderson not in HD

Brian Serridge
Excuse my ignorance but where did you see UFO in HD? Surely the Carlton boxed sets aren't HD are they?

All the best,

BRIAN

First time ever that I have seen UFO in HD.

Well if the Blu-rays look anything like that, and they should look even better one presumes..count me in.

With the forthcoming UFO movie I would have thought a Blu-ray release was inevitable.

The clip from MINDBENDER I linked to the other day was in high-def
(720p). It was taken from an American high-def broadcast of all
26 UFO episodes.

The quality isn't consistent in these HD transfers... the DVDs were
more consistent. Also, I originally encoded that clip as an example
of how the extreme close-up scenes look when cropped. The clip,
for those of you who missed it the first time, can be downloaded
from here (requires Windows Media Player or something that can
play .WMV files):

My DVD player upscales DVDs to 1080p, so does this mean the resolutionis HD when shown on a compatible TV? Technology confuses me!!!

Well, to truly be "high definition", the resolution needs to be high-def
to start with. Upscaling DVD resolution to HDTV resolution doesn't
make it HDTV. HDTV typically means a resolution of 720 x 1280
or 1080 x 1980 pixels. DVD is only 576 x 720 (PAL) or 480 x 720 (NTSC).

One can view an HDTV (720x1280) version of the UFO opening sequence on
this page (again, this requires software that can play a .WMV file):

No. The upscaler will only smooth it out a bit. I find that my own
upscaling DVD hardly makes a difference.

I find that using a HDMI cable between my DVD player and TV switched to 1080p improves the sound and picture quality considerably compared to SCART. Ihardly ever use SCART these days - there's just no comparison with HDMI.
