Fw: [SHADO] Viewmaster scans

Bruce Sherman

This is kind of cool :)  Will explain what I did.

This is a Windows 7 computer.  The only reason I mention that is because there is a built in software called Snipping tool.  Basically any image you see on your screen, can be easily saved to a jpeg file by highlighting a square box.  So I saved a left and right jpg file from the link below.  Then I used this program called SteroPhoto Maker. As I am sure just about everyone knows how original MSDOS suffix extensions, what they are all about.  a 3d graphic image is saved as a .MPO type file.  So I used the program to merge both jpg files to create a mpo type file.

3D cameras are starting to come out to the masses.  I have a Nintendo 3DS portable video game player, just because of the 3d camera (like men buying a certain mens magazine for the articles ;)  There is also a cell phone that takes 3d images.

So I took the mpo file, loaded it onto the memory card for the 3ds (had to change the file name and place it in the appropriate directory)  Turned it on.. and wow.. 3D :)

It looks like they are paper cutouts of people just standing up in a room :)  But you do see depth.

Bruce

take it to the next step??

Were the images 3d?? If so, there is software that merges it and if you use red/green (?) glasses, you can see the image in 3d looking at one image.

Okay, I just verified this with a quick test scan.

On my UFO website, I made this viewmaster scan a long time ago
(the late 1990's?):

Using current technology, here is a new scan:

Much better.

The tech for doing 3D now is to use polarized filters where one is turned 90
degrees from the other for the two eyes.  It's still a fool the eye trick that
will give you a headache after a long time viewing this version of 3D images.
This has been what has killed the 3D fad each time it has come out.

Cool -- did you have to wear special glasses to the see the 3-D?

Yes, it looks that way in the Viewmaster too... but they say
that these were real 3-D photos taken on the set...

no glasses... this is a small screen on a portable video game player.  Look at Nintendo 3DS hand held player.

I think the issue with this technology is you need to be in a certain spot. move from that spot.. and you lose the 3d effect.

I am a little bit of a camera buff.  When going on vacation to Disneyworld, I take with me about 5 cameras, for different conditions.  The 3D camera is a new toy.  I say within another year, 3d cameras will become more available in the same price range as current digital cameras.  The 3ds is about $170 now in the us.  Non 3d cameras with limited features like the 3DS, but better quality images is about $70

Branko

Is it only me, or the depth priorities on these viewmaster pics are bit off (eg. stars in spacewalk scenes look closer than anything else in the pics, light sources on the Moonbase scenes look closer than Straker who should be in the foreground, etc.)?
All the best,
Branko

Hmm, they look okay to me (e.g., stars in the background).  How are you viewing
them?

Just a note on 3d - some people's brains simply don't integrate the images
well and so the z-index ends up reversed. (My DH is one. We don't go to 3d
movies because things simply layer wrong for him and then he gets a massive
headache.)

I have learned the thechnique of viewing 3D pictures without any help in an old issue of "Starlog". I should check the viewmaster set to see if there is any difference. BTW, my viewmaster set has different booklet than the one on your site.

All the best,
Branko

Yes, I've got the American and German versions of the Viewmaster packaging
on my website.  I'm not sure how many different versions there are out there?

And thanks to Branko, here are pictures of the UK UFO Viewmaster booklet
(same photos as the German Viewmaster, but quite different from the US
booklet):

Hi,

Er, slight problem with your links as all the uViewBook numbers are the same (1), but if you change the number in the links between 1 and 8 you can view all 8 pages.

Thanks ever so for these, I did have a complete original set of "Close Up" but it got lost over the years.

Thanks!  Yes, my 1990's-style "link to each photograph" really does
need to be replaced with something more modern...
