Hello,
I am new to the group. I've heard that both Straker's car and the purple one used in the show were full scale props (not sure if they were built on pre-existing chasis or not). Does anyone have any info on the gull-wing van that was shown in a few episodes? Was this also a show built prop or a production vehicle? If it was a prop only, any info on the type of chasis it was built on?? Thanks in advance. Brian C. |

All those vehicles were originally built for the film JOURNEY TO THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN, and then tweaked a bit for UFO. I don't know about the chasis, but here is a pre-production painting done by Derek Meddings for the film: http://ufoseries.com/conventions/meddingsJeep.jpg And one of the jeeps now belongs to Paolo Malaguti, and is still drivable today (I wish I could say the same for Straker's car): http://ufoseries.com/italian/gitoJeep.jpg Perhaps Paolo knows something more about the chasis? As said, all the models were originally built for the film "Journey to
the far side of the sun" AKA "Doppelganger" in the UK.. Straker and Foster's cars were designed by Derek Meddings, and full size clay models were built by German car designers. they were then built on Ford MK4 Zephyr/Zodiac chassis, using alumininium body panels, and used escort engines and gearboxes.. The gull wing doors didn't work, and were lifted by the film crew just out of shot. The Jeeps were again designed by visual effects director Derek Meddings and constructed on British Leyland Mini Mokes by Space Models at Feltham.. apparently more reliable than Straker or Fosters cars.. For the cars go here...
http://www.cloudster.com/Sets&Vehicles/UFO_Car/ShadowCarTop.htm As for the Jeeps I believe they were built on Mini Moke chassis' with an extra axle on the rear. One of the behind the scenes publicity shots shows Ayesha walking towards the studios being filmed from an extended Mini Moke with a camera on the back. Thanks for the info. I love gull-wing door vehicles (own an '81 DeLorean) and being in the market for a small van was hoping that somewhere out there was some obscure gull-wing van. Too bad. Maybe if I get really ambitious I'll look into what it would take to build one. Too bad. They were great looking little vans.
Thanks Brian C. John <[hidden email]> wrote: As said, all the models were originally built for the film "Journey to the far side of the sun" AKA "Doppelganger" in the UK..
