So Marc,
here is my episode-of-the-week commentary (I hope it is interesting and not tooooo long :-) "Identified" is a typical Introduction-Episode (IMHO); they show as much hardware and people the story can bear and let us know why the Aliens come to Earth. And that's well done, I think. Here is what I have noticed: * Have a look at the escort man when he phones: he can speak into the phone but can obviously not hear a word because of the surrounding noise - and his helmet over his ears :-) * In some scenes the UFOs don't sound like the UFOs in further episodes - maybe they use different types (the new UFO Mark II e.g. :) * I find the shot of the UFO flying above the trees great! * BTW, what the Hell are the UFOs firing with? It looks like a Laser or some kind of a ray(gun) but can a ray of this kind produce such an explosion on solid ground? * The photo of the UFO (taken by Peter Carlin) looks like a painting to me. * Hey, Asheya's got knock-knees ;-) * Ever wondered what's written on the file Asheya is carrying with her? Well, simply HARLINGTON-STRAKER PRODUCTIONS. * Those were the days when environment-consciousness was a foreign word... When Straker gets out of his car he throws his cigar on the ground! Bad Ed! Fie! Today you would be called a polluter ;-) * In this ep it looks like that Freeman should be the humorous playboy type in the series (but, as we all know, Foster took over that part - although he was less humorous :-) (Oops! I can see a glare in Yuchy's eyes... I'd better run...) * Impractical: Straker's whole office moves down like a lift - isn't that a little bit costly? Despite the fact that everyone outside can see the room lifting down and can therefore start to wonder why... 8- * Hehe, Straker must begin learning politeness some time - now he is blowing the ashes from his desk on Freeman's trouser! :-) * Lt. Ford did his (first) mistake - and is lying too! He explains he is "just over two years" with SHADO but he was in "Confetti Check A- OK", and that was at least eight years ago! But otherwise, if Ford hasn't made the mistake, whom should Straker explain (and that's necessary for the viewer) how SHADO works? Himself? :-) * Shane Rimmer stars as Bill, the Seagull X-Ray pilot; he was obviously enticed away from the CIA - you can see him as CIA Agent in "Confetti Check A-OK"! * As far as I can remember SID was spoken by a british TV announcer. * The "Daily Express" Virginia Lake is reading shows the headlines "Moongold?" and "China an Russia in new border flare-up". * Are they really able to know where the UFO will land (the North Atlantic in this case) when the UFO is deep in space yet, heading for Earth? Besides, couldn't the UFO change it's course at any time? * Speaking of hardware: I personally like Straker's car, the Skydiver, the Moonbase and the Interceptors, especially when they are lifting off like dragonflies! (A girl friend of mine take this comparison - I think it fits.) And of course I like the mobiles (Moon or Earth, doesn't matter) too! Oh, and SID 8-) * The three explosions of the Interceptor rockets are obviously faded in and out. * Seen? They use "Scotch" tapes at SHADO ;-) * Sky 1 shots two missiles toward the UFO but only one explodes. * Guys, this Alien will come back! I know it, because the hospitalized Alien is performed by Gito Santana who will take the role again in "Survival" - and then we will shoot him properly! ;-) * "The rapid ageing of the Alien is certainly connected with the reaction of Earth' atmosphere on the body" tells Dr. Shroeder - but in later eps the only one which is harmed by Earth` atmosphere are the UFOs... or did anyone remember a wrinkled Alien in other eps? * The funeral scene is missing in the German TV version but not in the German Super-8 version! But otherwise the Super-8 version left out the scene where Gay Ellis changes her clothes... :-( So that's it! I hope I did my homework well and not too long :-) CU Christian |

As for people being able to see Straker's office descending from the outside, I always figured that he had one-way glass on his office window. Anyone else have more comments on IDENTIFIED? Since we're spending 2 weeks on each episode, you've still got a week remaining to watch & comment! -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |

Hi everybody! <waving>
I actually watched Identified last night! I like that episode. It does show all the hardware involved in SHADO. And I must agree with Marc, the scene at the beginning with Commander Straker driving up in his car, getting out wearing those sun glasses, it is a "cool" scene:-) One question I have in mind is what type of material is the dress Asheya wearing in her walking scene? It looks kind of fuzzy. And what kind of documents do you think she is carrying? Maybe it suppose to look like a script since she is walking through the Harlington-Strakers studio. I LOVE Miss Ealand! She is my idol! If they ever make UFO2 I WANT TO BE MISS EALAND!!!!!!! And another thing I noticed, is every time Straker said like "get Moonbase for me," or "get Skydiver involved," it was always to Lt. Ford. And then he fusses at the poor Lieutenant. I can easily see why Lt. Ford can make a mistake. Susan [hidden email] > |

Ok, for what it's worth:
I agree with the general consensus that Identified does an excellent job of introducing all the hardware, people, SHADO HQ and moonbase, however, this episode was not the first one I ever saw! I saw it on its second airing in 1973 and I was pleased as punch to see it at the time. I watched this ep a few day's ago and one thing that I noticed that has never registered before is in the very beginning when Peter and Leila Carlin and friend are in the woods. I never realised that he was shot by the alien. I suppose if they hadn't shot him then he would have been abducted, too. But then we would have missed groovy hip-shakin' 'it's a body' Captain Carlin, wouldn't we? One of my favourite bits about this episode is when a very sleek, svelte, and sexy Straker (complete with sunglasses) walks in Harlington- Straker studios. He catches the eye of a pretty girl sitting in a chair as he walks past her. Obviously, the girl has excellent taste. But the throwing the cigarette butt on the ground as he enters the building is a definite no-no. Isn't Colonel Freeman a lecher in this episode? Gee whiz. In fact, I remember Marc saying in a message last year that one of his scenes with the reception secretary, Janice, was taken out. I'm rather glad about that. Miss Ealand was very diplomatic when dealing with his 'advances'. Had it been me, I would have said: "Awa an' go boil yer heid!" Having said that, I think that there is a certain chemistry between him and Colonel Lake. I don't retch when I see him 'doing his stuff' with the passengers, in particular, with the lovely Virginia. I can understand why George suggested Wanda reprise her role when he left the show. I'm sure there is still many a fan-fic to be written about Colonels' Freeman and Lake. I'm not one for cigarette smoking but I have to say the use of smoke rings in Identified was used to artistic effect. Straker blows a perfect smoke ring in SHADO HQ and as it floats away with its shape still intact, he barks "Get me Moonbase!". The camera then pans to the circular shape of the moon. I find that quite arty. I bet that was Sylvia's influence. I wonder how many takes it took Ed to do that? And could he still do that today?;-) And I promise not to mention Straker's bulge. Oops, there, I said it;-) Ok, there are a few ideas for you. -- Suzanne Sutherland The Fat Fetuccine Mama |

Like everybody, I agree the introduction of the hardware is done excellently. Also, the scene transitions are done well such as Peter's sister scream blending into the sound of the airplane carrying Straker and Henderson coming in to land along with the transition from SHADO HQ to Moonbase. I wonder how Carlin's sister's death was explained to the family? being there is no body and they obviously don't tell them that she was a heart donor for an alien. Ron |

I don't think George Sewell had anything to do with it. Hmmm, somewhere I read that it was George but then I could be wrong. Whoever suggested her was certainly very forward-thinking. And I'm glad she was recruited again:-) > ><< I'm rather glad about >that. Miss Ealand was very diplomatic when dealing with his 'advances'.>> > > Oh how could someone not love Alec? That would make a good fan-fic story;-) Hey Deborah, have you written one that explains what was said to the Carlin Family? -- SuzannEd Sutherland |
I haven't written it - but most likely they were told that some remains were
found and identified via DNA. Capt Carlin would naturally be in on this expalanation, telling his parents the body was so badly decomposed (all that was left was some bones and hair) it would need to be a closed casket funeral, if they were going to have a casket at all. Since the ID was via DNA, no viewing of the body would have been necessary and Capt. Carlin would have handled that with his parents anyway. The faked autopsy report would indicate that cause of death was undetermined due to the state of the body, but she had been dead from about the time she was declared missing. This would also be put into the police file on the case, which would have been classified originally as a kidnapping, now murder, without leads as Peter's story was not credible and the only other witness was dead or missing. Actually, Peter was lucky - since his sister and the woman with him were dead or missing, he was the most likely suspect. Luckily for him, it's hard to shoot yourself in the back and the slugs taken from him would have matched those taken from the scene, which would have shown he was well away from the shooter and it was non-standard ammunition.
