Last weeks episode was "The Man Who Came Back". The colour balance
was interesting, made Straker's hair appear a rather unattractive shade of pale green! ;-) There were three edits; Collins and Grey talking in the SHADO corridor about going to Moonbase A section of Grey struggling for air in his sleep quarters The first part of the main launch sequence, including exterior shot of the rocket; mission control; inside the capsule where they joke about still being able to "drive" one of these things shouldn't that have been "fly"? ;-) For the "Late Nite Late" screening of this episode in 1988, Ed Bishop was interviewed, both before and afterwards. He admitted he hadn't seen an entire episode of UFO for many years; although he mistakenly thought this was the last episode made at MGM. He said it was a "very good episode", that the "story held together" and there were a lot of wonderful actors in it - he was "very impressed"! I think I'll agree with this assessment :-) This is the only episode that features the character of Col. Grey, as a replacement to Alec Freeman, with Col. Lake as Moonbase commander. In their commentary, Wanda and Sylvia discuss the casting in this episode. Wanda describes how she met Gary Raymond's wife many years later, who told Wanda she was the only woman who had taken a role away from Gary! In his interview, Ed relates the story of how he suggested Wanda be Straker's second-in-command, which of course is what happened. At the screen test, Col. Grey's character and appearance was, in his opinion, too similar to Straker. I actually think they contrasted quite well and it would have worked. According the now - 'not-so- Complete Book of UFO', the role of Col. Grey was written for this one episode only, as a kind of compensation for the actor :-) Wanda comments that Darren Nesbitt was renown for being "difficult" on set; however Sylvia justified his casting, by saying she felt actors respond "in kind" to the treatment they receive from the directors and producers and he was obviously fine on UFO. Wanda thought Darren was "menacing" and "dangerous" and both agreed he was "wonderful" in the role. Apparently, this ep is one of Wanda's favourites mainly because she had a lot to do and there was also a `relationship' issue; although she implied the `kiss' scene was not particularly pleasant, as it was shot early in the day and Darren Nesbitt smoked. She also pointed out that her costumes were not like other female operatives, because she felt her figure was unsuitable for the standard Moonbase outfit, hence hers appears quite different; more like a tunic. I also noticed that the nurse from AQOP has become a SHADO operative on Moonbase! :-) Finally, as another suggestion for fanfic writers; I think the ending of this ep would be an ideal opportunity for a continuing storyline, as Straker is left stranded completely alone out in space Nice ep I like it! :-D Thanks for reading :-) Sarah |
A Gary Raymond story...
The director Freddie Francis once made a film, The Ringer, starring Gary Raymond as a man who has an identical doppelganger. It was a low budget film which couldn't afford too many optical shots so Francis was struggling away doing over-the-shoulder shots with doubles etc. He said that Gary Raymond was a charming but quiet man so it was three weeks into the shoot before Raymond said in passing "I've got an identical twin brother you know". Francis managed to get the brother in for the rest of the shoot but was, not surprisingly, cursing that he didn't know earlier. Though looking quite good in Earth based outfits, it seemed to me that the silver outfit and purple hair did not suit her. As for the kissing scene where Nesbitt smoked, sounds like I'll have to rework the UFO cartoon for that episode. Regards, Kevin. |

Please note: I've got nothing against smokers, and have smoked myself including a pipe, and although this scene is not from the episode, only a smoker under Alien control would do this anyway. "Flight Path" Marc suggested a scene with Straker and his Planetary Apparatus may have cartoon potential. That was a hard one, what could possibly be important to Straker involving his dynamic Planetary display (other than the Aliens)? Lake may have got a bit of smoke in her hair, but I never considered them going up in flames. No wonder she was so upset. I wonder if those purple wigs are fire proof. Regards, Kevin. |
