The Mark 9 Hawk was featured in Space:1999, not UFO. There was *something* written back in the 1973-74 timeframe that tried to connect UFO and Space:1999 with stuff like this, but I can't remember the source ... some sort of ITC press release for Space:1999, perhaps? Anyone remember? Marc |

Marc:
I thought this gem appeared in Fanderson's FAB April Fool's message of a few years back? Or was that something else? I remember you and I discussing that offline....... I wrote the following before Marc's note was posted.... "No, it's not. There's been some fuzzy confusion over the years about the origin of the Hawk (used in Space:1999 episode -- War Games). Apparently, IIRC, there was a Fanderson April Fool's message (in their FAB magazine) a few years ago that revealed the background on how UFO became Space:1999 and the Hawk was mentioned as being made for the cancelled UFO: Year 2 series that became Space:1999." I think the Hawk *was* connected to UFO at the time, either through some ITC marketing material, or perhaps it *was* the original Interceptor design for the second series of UFO. I just don't remember where I originally heard this, or if we have any written "proof"... Marc |

The connection is in the Space 1999 Technical Manual, published by Starlog
Press and authorized by Gerry Anderson. If memory serves, and I'm also to lazy right now to go an retrieve my copy, but I reread it only a few months ago, the introduction states that Moonbase Alpha started off as a base for interceptors during the UFO incursions of the 1980's. This base was used by an organization called SHADO. After the incursions mysteriously stopped in the early 90's Moonbase was expanded and became a scientific outpost. So, that really raises the issue as to if it's cannon or not. If anyone would like me to upload a JPG of the introductory pages to the files section I would be happy to do it. Um, no, it's not in there. Just checked it.
But in case I missed it, feel free to upload it. Opps, my mistake. It IS in my copy of the manual, but it's on a supplemental
page that came originally from the March 1980 Starlog, pages 52-53. It's a two page spread from the Gerry Anderson Space Report. It's a top/bottom blue print of the Mark IX Hawk. Here is the first paragraph that accomponies the blueprint....... The Mark IX Hawk is a small, medium- to-long-range fighter craft developed as a deterrent to possible extraterrestrial attack. There was a need for such a spacecraft during the UFO offensive of the mid-1980s, when Earth's main line of defense was compact, one-man fighters operated from the lunar base of Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization (SHADO), which is now part of MoonbaseAlpha. I can upload the whole thing if anyone is interested. Again this came from the Gerry Anderson people so it makes it rather hard to ignore it. To be honst, I have always assumed that UFO and 1999 have had some connection. I think it would be best to ignore any attempts to connect UFO and
SPACE:1999. They might have originally wanted to play it that way but the way they went with Space:1999 really would make it impossible. First blasting the Moon out of Earth obit. Well there goes Moonbase even it is then called Moonbase Alpha. There are no longer any Alien attacks so SHADO would have been disbanded. But the main point and everyone seems to have missed it including the people who came up with the concept for the series is that if you blast the Moon out into space the effects of this on the Earth would be very damaging. Earthquakes, tidalwaves which would leave those not killed in a rather bad way. So as far as UFO is concerned this is no Moonbase Alpha or any of it personel and there isn't a vast store of nuclear material stored on the lunar surface that might blow up any moment. James K. Thanks for the info Jim. That Starlog blurb probably goes a long way in
explaining where this connection came from -- maybe that's when I first read it, too -- all those years ago? If it's easy to scan and upload, I'd love to see it myself. Just created a Photo Album called Mark IX Hawk. In it are 3 photos. The
first is page 52 of the article. Second is page 53. The third is a close up of the text. Unfortunately Starlog ran the story on two different paper types. A glossy type, and a newsprint type. The Newsprint has yellowed considerably but actually seems to look better in the scan than the glossy. Go figure:) Jim |

>Again this came from the Gerry Anderson people so it makes it rather hard to
>ignore it. Well, it may be part of "Gerry Anderson's Space Report", but it was written by Geoffrey Mandell, and edited by David Hirsch. Mandell might have been an employee of ITC New York (since the head of ITC New York was Abe Mandell), and David Hirsch was the guy who put together INVASION:UFO. So I'd put this in the "fan fiction" category, not canon... Marc |
