Mindbender Discussion

Beaver James seems to have a foot in both reality and
hallucination when he grabs Colonel Lake, using her as
a kind of hostage or human shield.
We are never shown from his viewpoint who he thought
he had hold of.
Try as I might, I can never make out what Beaver James
says that indicates to Ed Straker that he was seeing
Aliens.

I think he says something like "They're everywhere!" or "They're
Aliens in Shado" or something like that, which leaves the audience to
guess what he is reffering to.

What got me was why he saw Shado control how it was (minus people, of
course), but Straker saw the outside of the studio and parts of the
moonbase sets.

Hi Everybody,

Did Straker really see the outside of the studio? part of the
moonbase sets? Even the cameo by Mrs. Anderson? Are you certain?
Silly question, but still. Straker's reality might have been
completely diffrent. I believe he saw those things as an
hallucination as a blind; and for the benefit of the viewer (this is
the incredible thing) it was created as a double blind as "we" are
not really certain which is or is not reality. Are "we"?

What I mean is:
1. Is the TRUE reality the studio and sets with actors that Straker
saw; the behind the scenes shots that he afforded the viewer (us) a
glimps of. Straker, the actor (etc)

or

2. Is SHADO as we know it the reality? Is Straker as the commander
of "the intrepid band of international heros"? The reality that is
built up by each and every other episode of the legondary series.

That is the double blind - WE (the audiance) don't know what the
true reality is. Mindbender is not only the most brilliant, but
also the most amazing episode of the entire series. In my view, it
represents the best of what UFO is; a brilliant science-fiction
adventure in the first place, but also (using a 1960's term I
learned from my parent's) a "mind trip".

I say BRAVO!!! Mindbender is amoung the cream of the crop of
intelligent Science Fiction.

Now before you call the sanitorium and send the people with the
white coats for poor ole Tasha, I do know what reality is and that
UFO is a TV show. :P

Hugs,
Tasha :-)

That wasn't Sylvia Anderson seen in MINDBENDER. Obviously it
was a character *based* on Sylvia Anderson, but it wasn't her.

Poor tasha. Of course we won't send in the White Coats. We'll
just...give you Dr. jackson instead.

thaks for the views on Mindbender, I think that cleared it up a bit.

As James grabs Lake, he says (something like) "alright aliens,
I've got one of you". We can only assume that Lake mentioned this
to Straker after the incident.
