I could never understand why SHADO never built Moonbase underground, for
obvious reasons: Safety & security from alien attack - try destroying the base through all that rock- & security/secrecy from such organisations as Dalotek or other moon based groups, that might stumble across the base i.e., run it on the same lines as the base under the film studio......just a thought. |

Kevin; good thoughts. I have wondered the same, but the only thing I can come up with is: 1. The time that it would take to dig out the structure. SHADO was to be operational in a fairly short time, hence it made sense to build the main part above ground and keep the weapons and interceptor storage underground. That would take the minimal amount of time. Also the seismic <sp> activity would have been detected, if it had gone on for any length of time. Plus, the removal of the material. Remember, Space 1999 was to be the UFO second season and Alpha was was alot bigger underground. 2. That the current Moonbase was only an interium base. See above comments. I think that if UFO was to go in in the series, Moonbase would have moved into a bigger base and there would have been more defenses also. A larger Interceptor force, more personnal. I actually like the design of Moonbase; it makes a lot of sense. You can see from the exterior that it was built from pre-fabricated sections and panels. From the information that we have on SHADO, we know that Moonbase was one of the last things constructed. Building a base on Earth is easier, building one on the Moon would require a lot more effort with other difficulties. See the episodes "Confetti Check A-OK" and "Destruction" for information on the building of SHADO. Nick |

There are plenty of ways to put structures under the ground. "Cut and Cover" is the best way for such a deal on the moon, where environmental restoration is not a concern.. You simply dig or blast out a trench using high explosives, lower the moonbase sections into them, and bulldoze them over. An old lunar base building concept from the 60's envisioned a conveyor-belt like trench digging machine which neatly cut the trench into the ground, and then something like a huge snowblower to circle around it and throw the soil back on top of it when done. Nothing could be seen afterwards but a low mound of dirt. ....Not very interesting viewing for camera lead-in shots for moonbase scenes, which is why I suggest they didn't go that route. The above ground base simply looks cooler. Dave H. |

Just my two cents here. Kevin, what about communications. You need to have some structures on top because it is very hard to communicate through solid rock. In UFO's 1980 the UFO's might have found it easier to bury Moonbase. But having defences on the moon's surface would make it harder to hit the right target. Moonbase Alpha always had bad luck whenever they were attacked. Beams fell from the roofs and hit operatives. Too bad they couldn't have developed force fields for more than gravity. But it might not have been as dramatic either.
