The author (Amelia, as I note from a later mail) was actually
referring to an apparent one-shot hole - no complaint about
that, artistic licence and whatnot, but it's just not possible
in reality, as you say. I reckon the odds against it happening
even on a good day are astronomical, at any reasonable range.

I'm a rifle shooter myself - I shoot a (smallbore) Anschutz
1413 competitively, but I've dabbled in pistol shooting
(when it was actually possible here in the UK). I've known
some first class pistol shooters, and as you will know, at
20 yards or so if you can get five shots into a 20mm group
you are doing fantastically well.

It's not possible to the degree that Riggs does it in Lethal
Weapon - with a pistol, at that range, at that speed, and to
that impossible degree of accuracy. Watch it again!

Anyway, nice to have another shooter on the list .. and another
James of course :)

Okay James we are going to have to agree on this about the smiley face. I
had forgot about the speed. You just can't turning that sort of accuracy
with a pistol at that range at that speed. I know that Rigg's was suppose
to have been a sniper in Vietnam and this would have given him the hand and
eye to do it but the speed is just out of the question.
I know that Straker must have seen combat from the ribbons on his
uniform in Identified and Confetti Check A-O.K. Did anyone ever think to
identify what they were? The costume people are usually good at making sure
that the right decorations go on uniforms. Most people don't notice stuff
like that but there will be some who will spot a mistake like a modern day
soldier wearing a WWI decoration. If someone knows what Straker's
decorations are we might can figure out what his skills are relating to
weapons. I don't think he got that many in 'Nam in the Air Force flying
planes unless he was the Ace of Aces.
An Anschutz, very nice. Well have to talk off site about shooting.

SHADO Librarian
The SHADO Library has a listing of what a couple of us extrapolated from
Straker's ribbon array - myself and some USAF types who used to be with the
list - see http://www.shadolibrary.org/crew/straker/indexb.htm

LOL!! You know, I was only 12 at the time but I was convinced at one
point that she had nothing covering her assets;-)

Yeah, I liked Georgina, too. There was something comforting about
seeing the regular cast week after week.

Ed was a very scary and formidable person to me back then, too. Of
course, I know better now. He had a lot of angst going on inside his
head and heart concerning his family, however, had he been my CO, he
would have had me quaking in my boots.

Just the other day, Sheila and I were watching Subsmash on satellite
television (yeah, I don't forget things like that, Marc);-) and we both
agreed that way back when we first watched the series we would get
embarrassed whenever we saw Straker smile because we just thought it
such an odd thing for him to do!

I researched his ribbons - seems like he had one from the Korean War?
Let me find that list ....

Here is my original post on the subject:
-------------
Oddly enough, I don't see a Vietnam medal - I see a Korean war medal.

This is what I make out from the scene where he falls out of the Rolls:

One row of two and four rows of three ribbons as follows:

1. Silver Star
2. Legion of Merit

3. Distinguished Flying Cross
4. AF Organizational Excellence Award
5. Air Medal

6. Joint Service Commendation Medal
7. AF Commendation Medal
8. Purple Heart

9. Outstanding Unit Award
10. AF Good Conduct Medal
11. National Defense Medal

12. Korean Service Medal
13. AF Longevity Award
14. United Nations Service Medal

And then that "Pocket Rocket" thing on the right - someone mentioned
what that was once, but I didn't get it <shrug>
----------------

Seems I recall someone saying that Pocket Rocket thing was only for
non-coms ....
And the picture I made is still in the files section at Yahoogroups
.....

Actually, the "pocket rocket" just signifies that he served as a
missile mole, sitting at an underground missile silo farm waiting for the
EWO code, and can be worn by either officers or enlisted personnel.

Well - I don't think it *is* very odd personally - I'm sure
that whoever was tasked with providing Straker's uniform was
just asked to provide an Air Force Colonel uniform with a bunch
of ribbons! It would be a bit too much to expect authenticity
at that level of detail, even for those of us with anoraks in
our wardrobe. I don't think it's fair to conclude that Straker
took part in the Korean War, and I think he would have been a
little too young, anyway. In fact I've just worked out that
Straker would have been about ten at the end of the war.

James,

that was a statement on an SFX card game (see message # 3818:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SHADO/message/3818 ) which obviously
isn't meant to be serious.
*I* would give Straker at least a 9 out of 10 (and "Drinking
capacity" must be 1 out of 10 for this teetotaler ;-)

He is at his most scary when he is being very determined. Like in Kill
Straker in Moonbase when an attempt has just been made on his life. In
response to Foster' s query. "What happened?" he snaps back "You tell me!".
He looks so formidable and you just know he is on to Foster already! He
seems to have noticed that Foster is acting out of character.

Well we all know that the only person that knew what was cutting him up
inside was Freeman. In Kill Straker we see Freeman playing the role of great
defender. He rebukes Foster more than once. "Now listen, Foster Commander
Straker doesn't have to take that from anybody!" he says to the arrogant
strutting Foster at one point. There is an implied sympathy for Straker, in
his voice that says, you have to treat him with respect because of all he
has suffered and not just because he is your CO.

We get very few insights into the heartache that goes on inside Straker and
it is embarrasing when we do because it's like he is bearing his soul for us
to examine.

In Kill Straker and Sub Smash we see Straker struggling with his emotions.
in both episodes he is very strong willed. In the confrontation scene in the
control sphere in Moonbase, when the air is running out, both parties are
determined to see the other out. . Foster boasts that he is younger, fitter,
stronger but Straker reminds Foster it is his will power that will win
through. "You're forgetting one thing, Foster, will power".

This is one of my favourite episodes and scenes from it stayed with me all
through the dark years of no UFO to watch.

How much longer have we got to discuss this episode, Marc?

BTW Hi to all the newbies! I am so glad you found us!

She seems the most under rated memeber of SHADO.And you are right, the loss
of Alec and co. in the 2nd 1/2 was a let down.Col Lake has the looks but
seems a little stiff.

i didn't know that.He looked unusual, ruthless. He was The face of UFO.

Right, and the reactions of the smile's recipients are the same, surprised and
a little shocked at the Cmdr's show of humanity behind that steely gaze.
