But now I know that is really Dave, Servelan impersonator extraordinaire

Kill Straker

cvandie
In reply to this post by Marc Martin

Dim the lights, switch off the phone - fasten your seat belts we're going to
"Kill Straker".
I dont think Col Foster at any time WANTED to kill Cmdr Straker, but fought
the implanted sub-conscious urge for as long as he could. He begins by trying
to 'kill' Strakers career, claiming the Cmdr has become an egoistical empire
building megalomaniac, and tries to have him removed as CEO of SHADO
permanently.Ed seems more hurt by this attack on his integrity, than by
Foster's physical attempt later.I liked the symbolism of Ed fussing with the
chess pieces, until he picks up the black king and realises that Foster has
become a serious threat to his leadership. He wonders just how serious it
will get.

Col Foster is forced to up the ante after Straker survives one murder
attempt and his carefully planned character assassination. The increasing
pressure of the alien brainwash plunges Foster deeper into psychosis. He is
no longer the Col Foster we know and love, but a psychotic maniac bent on
killing Ed Straker, and he is getting nastier by the minute.Taunting his
leader... "Younger,fitter,stronger...". Ultimately Cmdr Straker survives, but
now there is the problem of tieing up the loose ends. No one gets fired from
SHADO and Foster is prepared for the worst...unless...

Dr Jackson has done all he can,now its up to Paul.In a nightmare shoot out
that brings about his catharsis,Pauls mind is once and for all cleansed of
alien poison.Mike Billington puts his acting cards on the table in this
scene and does rather well i thought. He takes a good slapping from Ed.And
where the idea came from that Ed Straker is not good with guns,i don't know
- but he certainly demonstrated phenomenal marksmanship. He is an ex USAF
colonel after all.
The ep ends on a lighter note as the 3 musketeers share a 'moment'
together, all is forgiven and they are friends again. And i breath a sigh of
relief after an 48 minutes of superior entertainment.

Just a few thoughts on this ep; any comments and/or criticisms welcomed.

Hi CV,

<<The increasing pressure of the alien brainwash

getting nastier by the minute.Taunting his

"But you're forgetting one thing, Foster...
WILL POWER !" (Steely glare)

Foster's locking Straker in the moonbase command
sphere and holding a gun on him seems to be a replay
of the scene in 'Exposed' where Foster first makes an
appearance. Then, Straker locked Foster in a film
studio hangar and held a gun on him. Revenge ?

The moonbase command sphere is punctured by a bullet
hole and depressurises. Straker and Foster both lose
consciousness. When the moonbase staff enter the
sphere, they find Straker and Foster both unconscious,
face down on the floor.

Mike B's comment - 'What a night that was !' <g>.

<<Ultimately Cmdr Straker survives, but now there is
the problem of tieing up the loose ends. No one gets

According to what Ed and Mike said, the blows were
real as well - Mike felt it would be less painful to
get slapped than to risk having to re-shoot the scene
!

<<48 minutes of superior entertainment>>

Definitely !

Regards,

Andy

First thanks Chris. I know what you mean, she is ...well she is Gabrielle
Drake and
that is pretty awesome. I didn't have to miss anything to watch UFO as it
came on Sunday afternoons here and you know what programing is like on that
day. It was on opposite Wonderful World of Disney and The King and I so it
had no competition as far as I was concerned.

Now as to Kill Straker. I am a bit unsure about putting my two cents worth
in on this episode as I have not seen it since back in 1973 when the series
ended here. I have 11 episodes I have manage to get on tape from friends but
its not one of them. But certain images from that episode remain in my mind
and I think you did a great job in outlining the plot and summing up the
mental processes behind the actions.

The scene that really stands out in my memory is that scene on the firing
range. At the time I wondered if Straker wold have to actually kill Foster.
This was UFO and it didn't always have happy endings and we had seen other
characters that had been in several episodes die. So I was thinking it could
be possible. The other thing I recall is the pistol Straker used. It wasn't
the standard SHADO handgun. I recognized it from my knowledge of weapons as
a SIG-210-6. This is the Rolls Royce of pistols and the 210-6 is like the
Bentley costing over $1200 at that time. This was the first real gun I had
seen on the show and seeing Ed fire it on that range which had not been used
in any other episode made me wonder if this was a real range and if he was
using live ammo. The hits on the target looked more real to me than when
they use squibs behind one because it blows the paper out rather than
punching a hole. Like Chris, I was impressed by Straker's marksmanships
which was in the Expert/Master class. How could they say Straker isn't good
with weapons. I think he could equal that stunt that Mel Gibson's character
Riggs did in the first Lethal Weapon film with shooting like that.

She was the reason i tuned in every week, hoping the rest of the family would
leave me to watch her on my own. :->It was tough when she dropped out of the
2nd 1/2 of the series.Georgina Moon was another favourite,i was never sure
if she was wearing undergarments beneath that alluring string vest.In last
months discussion episode we did the Responsibility Seat,in which Miss Moon
at one point turns to the camera and says: "Checking boosters!"...I'm sure
she got a lot of that.

I wondered the same thing. Now i try to watch these programmes as i would
have in 1970,all disbelief in suspension, and Ed Straker could be a scary
SOB.

Just as a matter of interest, Wanda Ventham features heavily in the Dr
Who story on the UK Sci-fi channel on Sunday 17th June at 8.05 playing
the part of Dr Thea Ransome in "Image of the Fendahl" from the Tom
Baker/Leela era.

I have only minimal memories of that eps because like James K. I saw it so
many yrs ago. I recall the tenseness in the Moonbase sphere, and the angst
between Straker and Foster. I also agree with James about the UFO "unhappy
endings." I think that was one of the reasons the show was so compelling. It
was adult sci-fic for sure. I forgot completely the scene in the firing
range and now I guess I'll have to scrape up the eps from some kind
soul.......no comments intended about bootlegging, etc.

That is one of my fave DW eps, too, but I swear! I never recognized her!
She's not one of my faves, so maybe that's why - I just wasn't looking
out for her ...

LOL! I'm downloading that movie now, but of course, now that I KNOW it's
her, it's obvious, but until Tiger pointed it out last time we watched
that ep, I hadn't realized. <shrug> Sorry. <smirk>

Straker is undoubtedly impossibly talented with that rifle in
Kill Straker, I must say. Who said he wasn't? Apologies if
I haven't been paying sufficient attention ..

I think you're right about Straker being able to equal the stunt
Riggs pulls off in Lethal Weapon - where he very accurately
draws a smiley on a target card at about 25 yards.

In fact I believe I read a fanfic story where Straker puts 8
rounds through the same hole on a target range with a pistol.
Not really possible in 'real life', any more than Riggs' trick,
even for an Olympic standard shooter with a target pistol and
matched ammunition, but that's why we have fiction :)

Re: Kill Straker

Hi James,
About shooting a one hole group not being possible except in fiction.
It depends on what the writer means by one hole. If the writer means that
Straker puts all 8 rounds into the same bullet hole without making it any
bigger you are right. It would be very difficult for a Olympic Master class
shooter to do this using the best pistol and ammo available. But it might
happen on a good day if everything when just right. However the writer might
mean that Straker shoot what is refered to as a "one hole group". This is a
group where the bullets hits are so close that it just makes the first hole
bigger but it only leave one hole in the target. I shoot in the expert to
master class and I can do this.
Now as to drawing a smiley face with bullet holes. Sorry this is
possible. I can do it but there are shooters who can. Years ago the gun an
ammo companies had what were known as exhibition who gave shows and drew
pictures with bullet holes. Annie Oakley did it. So did Ed McGivern back in
the 30's. There is some guy doing it now but I can't recall his name. So it
is possible that Ed Straker could do it. It just takes a steady hand, a keen
eye and lots of ammo to practice with.
Sorry Marc for getting off UFO this an last time.

Sure thing Amelia.
If you are anyone else needs any help in writing in the area of
weapons I'll be glad to help.
I just finished a new article for Communique where I did a update to
the small arms of SHADO I did five years back and I'm got some interesting
stuff in it.
