More frame captures from Box Set 2

jamesgibbon

The last lot! I'm starting to run out of space ..

http://freespace.virgin.net/james.gibbon/ufoimages/

This set is from Timelash, Mindbender and Reflections In The
Water. I've also snapped some of the 'actor profile' bios and
'behind the scenes' material from the extras on disc 8, and a
couple of the menu screens. One or two shots from the opening
credits as well.

Some mouthwatering shots of Anouska Hempel in there. Check this
one out boys:

I thought these images of Straker were quite dramatic:

Heh, heh...

Well, you could always delete the first batches
and make some more... :-)

For example, that publicity shots of Deborah
Grant posing on top of that sports car... wow!

Really excelllent images, James - many thanks !

The photo quality is incredible - you can even see the
wires holding up Sky One, which would never show up on
a TV screen.

The biogs. are interesting too - particularly
Vladek's; he arrived in the UK at age 35 with no money
and no knowledge of English, yet made a career in
acting ? Incredible !
But the Michael Billington biog. gets his 'Onedin
Line' character name wrong - it was Fogarty, not
Fogherty - and if memory serves, he was in the first
two series, not just the first one.

Do you just need a DVD-ROM drive in your PC to save
these frame captures, or do you need special software
as well ? And would it be ok to use your pics in my
website etc ?

It's a pity the magazine reviewers of the DVDs - who
must surely have had both copies of the DVDs and the
technology to make frame captures like these from it -
didn't do so, instead using the same two or three old
photos to illustrate their articles.

Thanks again,

Andy

Hi Andy,

You DO need special software - I use a (free) Linux DVD player
called 'xine'. Christian has the lowdown on appropriate
software for Windows users I believe.

As for using the pics on your website, well they aren't my pics,
they still belong to Carlton! Just help yourself, I don't
suppose anyone will mind.

Although I do seem to remember that Marc had a communication
from Carlton a couple of years ago, after which he added a small
copyright notice to his site.

PSYCHOBOMBS. Publicity Photos. There are several of Deborah
posing with her red sports car, none of which I'd ever seen
before. The first one is my favorite snap, but her hair is
so fluffed out that she looks more like Heather Graham (seen
in The Spy Who Shagged Me) than her character in UFO.

BTW, watched THE LONG SLEEP and CONFETTI CHECK A-OK last
night. Since my wife was in the living room, I tried to
select episodes that she hadn't seen before... perhaps
one of these days she'll see one that doesn't have an
unhappy ending... :-)

Yeah it certainly is a nice car ..

OK, a few more -

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jgibbon/ufoimages/

- some frame captures from DESTRUCTION, some interesting stuff
about DOPPELGANGER from the extras on disc 7, and those Deborah
Grant publicity shots.

Thanks for those, James!

BTW, when watching THE LONG SLEEP last night, I was surprised to
find that on my television, the flashbacks were plenty colorful,
(brownish) much moreso than on your frame captures. Perhaps
the color is turned up too high on my TV, or there's some
other difference going on here. It's funny how all of the
flashbacks are sepia EXCEPT for the scenes of the UFO, which
are all in glorious full-color.

Also, the eyeliner on Straker and Foster is much more
noticeable than I've ever seen it before...

Hmm - could be, looks about the same on mine! Maybe something
to do with PAL->NTSC?

Yes - it's really blatant! It's noticeable that not all the male
actors are wearing eyeliner, but Messrs Bishop & Billington
always seem to have it on!

I don't ever remember noticing it before to be perfectly honest,
not even on the TV broadcasts back in the early '70s when the
film was still fairly new. I suppose the average colour TV must
have been pretty poor back then, by modern standards. We're
lucky that UFO was made using 35mm film. I'm also a fan of the
British TV series 'Callan' which was made at the same time as UFO
and (I believe) was shot on videotape - and the picture quality
on the DVD release is quite rough, a world apart from these
crystal-clear digitally remastered UFO episodes.

Still - I'd just HATE to discover that Edward Woodward was
wearing eyeliner in 'Callan', so maybe it's for the best! :)

Maybe one day I'll get the time to write that Callan/UFO
crossover story I sometimes daydream about.

Well, I've got the following hard-/software:
As for the hardware: I've got a DVD ROM drive (ATAPI DVD-ROM STAR
2000) with 12x speed. The software I use is the "InterVideo WinDVD
2000 Vers. 2.3". With it I am able to do a print on my hard disk from
nearly every scene or position of the DVD. For this becomes a BMP
file I have to change it into a JPG file. For that reason I use "MS
PhotoDraw 2000 Vers. 1.0" (which is rather expensive :-( ). Some pics
(especially the widescreen ones) I have to get into the right size
and then I save it in a JPG format.

James, I've got the impression that some of your pics have a blue
cast. I want to check it with my frame caps but sadly the box set
hasn't arrived this week :-(

Otherwise: great captures, James! (Seems you're making me jobless,
bloke :-)

(Whistle!)
Blow me! What a beauty! You're right, Marc! She's really looking like
Ms Graham. Maybe Austin Powers should become a UFO fan so they can
use scenes from our series in the next movie? :-)

(Thanks again, James, for the caps!)

I'm waiting for the second box set to arrive.

That's interesting, but I don't have that impression myself! I
think some of your captures are on Marc's site, so I'll do a
comparison with the same scenes. Of course, even if they
don't match, that might only mean that yours have a red cast! :)

Here are two captures of the same scene from the credits. One of
yours, and one of mine - not from the same DVD, but I'm confident
that it will be exactly the same source (I don't imagine that
the opening sequence was remastered 26 times!)

http://freespace.virgin.net/james.gibbon/ufoimages/ufo021.jpg

http://www.ufoseries.com/videos/ukDvdPicQualityUFO.jpg

Now - I don't see a difference in the colour tone. It's evident
that the detail is sharper on mine - but I guess that's probably
because you compressed yours a little tighter to save space .. ?

On the other hand, it's not exactly the same frame, perhaps there
are differences in the resolution of detail between frames on the
source, though this seems a bit unlikely - they are probably
only one or two frames apart at most.

Note that I cropped mine manually to remove the narrow black bar
at the top of the image.

Either way - no blue cast, I would say - it would be quite
apparent in the green foliage and the sky.

OK boys, I couldn't resist. Here are some slightly better shots of
the three Deborah Grant pub photos. The names are as James posted
them on his site but I added an 'a' to the end of each file name.
Yahoo photos cut the resolution when I posted them there so I removed
them and put them in a zip file and shot them up to the files area.
Look for Deborah-Grant.zip, it's just under 1 Meg.

Thanks for all the great caps James!

James,
Thanks for more great frame captures.
The ones of Deborah Grant and the Porsche 914 are fantastic. The car
isn't bad either<g>. For some reason I had got the cars mixed up. I had Jo
Grant in the 914 and and Linda in the Porsche 912.
The scenes of the UFO approaching the ship over the water in
Destruction are outstanding. It just shows what a master of special effects
Derek Meddings was. I have a book on special effects which I think was among
the first film reference books I got and it said that doing miniature shots
in water are the hardest to do because you can't get water to scale down so
the waves match the size of your miniatures. Guess no one told this to
Meddings because just look at those wave ripples in comparison to the UFO an
the ship in the background. I looks perfect to me.

Hi James!

Well, I use a low compression factor but the picture quality is 150
dpi (maybe you use 300 dpi?). Hm, I understand that my pic got a size
of 64 KB and yours 99 KB so there must be a difference in the
compression. Seems that I have to experiment a little :-)

But you're right, there is no colour tone difference in this pic. But
I had the impression with some of the new caps, maybe this should be
so. Anyway, I am eagerly awaiting my box set! :-))

Thanks, James, for you had puting my nose on something which I
haven't concerned too much yet so that I can improve the picture
quality in the future! :-)

Cheers,
Christian

Well actually after looking through the images again after
reading your comment I DID get the impression that there's a
slight blue cast on some of those pics. I could be wrong, but
if there is, it's definitely already there on the DVD. I wonder
if a blue filter was used to bring out the colour of the sky,
or Straker's eyes in a few scenes.

Well, James, I think as soon as my set arrives I will make the same
frame captures too so that we are able to compare them properly.
