I am making a new posable Poser 4.3 CGI model of a UFO, with a hold
and a cabin. At http://www.buckrogers.demon.co.uk/temp/ufo are three CGI pictures with aliens that I made using it. I don't know whether this can be considered as another opinion on the old question about "how big is a UFO?". |
GREAT CGI PICS!!! of the UFO. I wish I could get the Poser Alienga to work in Poser. I would think that the UFO air frame was rather large since it had to travel interstellar distances. What would be the point of sending a "Volkswagon Beetle" across the vast distance between planets if you could not "put anything in the trunk?" I would think the ship would be at least half the size of Skydiver. I would think that the craft are generally larger than that. I would think the smallest cargo area would need to be at least the size of the Space Shuttle. What do you think?

I think that having a cargo area the size of the space shuttle might be a bit
too big. We never really get to see a UFO in the same scene with anything that we can compare it to size wise. It is seen near some type of pine tree in Computer Affair. We had some giant pines in my backyard which were perhaps 8 or 9 feet across and the UFO is clearly bigger than ther the tree across by 3 or 4 times. Also we know that in ESP a UFO hits Croxley's house killing his wife but the home is still there. It one was big enough to contain a space shuttle would it have just flatten the whole thing? Think about it. James K. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

With apologies to members who do not use Poser, but:- Hereinafter, for "...\Poser", read the name of the folder where your Poser is. That will probably be something like c:\Program Files\Curious Labs\Poser4\ or something of that sort. Unpack the zipfile into the folder ...\Poser\aa\alienga\ (not ...\Runtime\... or ...\Geometries\... ), creating the folders if necessary. Please email to me privately telling me what faults you were having. If you have not a PC but a Mac, ask on http://www.renderosity.com . |

Well, I think there IS a scene where one can compare the size of a UFO with a useful vehicle: I mean the car of Roper in a scene from E.S.P. where one can see the UFO passing by his car. I think I've made a frame capture of this but I'm at at the office now so I will post it when I'm at home again :-) Christian |

Christian,
if you have a frame capture of a UFO passing Ropers car this would indeed give you something of a known size to measure against, if you know the size of the particular car. If you don't then you can measure it against something that is of known size and pretty much standard everywhere the width of the highway which are usually around 18 to 24 feet for a two lane road. In this frame capture one can see that the UFO (at least this one) isn't very big. Looks like only one of the Aliens is able to stand up and the other two (?) have to sit down - IF three of them fits in the UFO at all! I think the UFO in which the Aliens abduct Foster was a little bigger - allright, this was only a dream UFO :-) Christian |

> Here is the frame capture that Christian e-mailed to me: > > http://ufoseries.com/temp/flightpath-carufo.jpg > > Marc As I recall, all ufos seen during the series looked basically the same, so the ufos must had been the same size (otherwise, you wouldn't expect that everything would scale up or down at the same proportion). I am taking about the "real" ufos, not the models. I was going to point out the ufo in A QUESTION OF PRIORITIES. As you all probably recall, before it crashes in the sea, the alien leaves the ufo in a small capsule that comes out from the bottom of the flying ufo. Now it seems to me that this capsule must had been very small, probably just big enough to hold a single alien. David |

There is a Japanese paperback book devoted to UFO besides the one from Town
Moak. This is a bit smaller one that that one being about the size of a standard paperback novel. It has drawing of the different SHADO vehicals with cutaways views of the interiors. It also has one of the UFO with the little escape pod(?) inside. I get the impression from the drawing that only one alien could fit in it and only one controlled the UFO at the very top of the craft. Marc do you have this book so you could do a scan of this ? It is on pages 126-127. James K. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

A Japanese friend kindly agreed to translate the Japanese captions which describe the various components are - see below if interested. Wow, over three years ago now, that's a bit scary. ------- Forwarded Message Date: 07 Mar 1999 12:43:40 +0000 From: James Gibbon <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Subject: UFO diagram translation Hi everyone, I met up with my Japanese friend last night and she translated the UFO diagram on Marc's page at http://ufo.simplenet.com/books/jaguar6.jpg. The large, bold text at the top says "Unidentified Flying Object [literally 'mysterious flying disk'] 'UFO' complete internal diagram" (the much smaller text along the top is a Hiragana character set translation of this intended for younger readers). The captions with pointers to the cutaway diagram, clockwise from the top around the UFO, say: 1. Universal frequency antenna 2. Shield condensor 3. Magnetic field convertor/neutraliser 4. Energy absorption panel 5. Anti-gravity drive 6. Ejector pod 7. Anti-gravity radiators 8. Energy convertor 9. High frequency magnetic wave Mebius coil 10. Piloting computer (optical) 11. Organic main computer We had a bit of trouble with some of the terms as my friend is not really familiar with technical/scientific terms in either language.. in one or two cases I've applied a little bit of guesswork in the interpretation, for example her first translation of the second item was 'protector condensor'. Interesting that there is no mention of any weapon. I like the idea that the panels are intended to absorb energy for the anti-gravity drive. On Anthony's point that there doesn't seem to be enough space for a pilot, I'd guess that artist intends for the alien to occupy the 'ejector pod' permanently during flight, just as a fighter pilot sits in an ejector seat. Cheers James ------- End of Forwarded Message |

One problem with this picture, though - the UFO could be one inch
across but right in front of the camera, with the bigger car far back. Forced perspective? That's a problem with a 2-D view. Anyone remember the film "Top Secret"? There's a scene of what looks like a phone very close to the camera with someone sitting at a table. Phone rings. Guy picks up the phone which was at the far end with him but it was a HUGE phone no close to the camera at all. Tough to explain, I guess, but it showed how the eye can expect to see one thing and can be fooled. How do we know that each of the UFO models represented in the series were all
the same size. I hate to do a crossover comparison, but Star Trek depicts a Klingon "Bird of Prey" Warship first the size of a 747 Airbus then a larger version of the same ship the size of the Galaxy class Enterprise. Why can't the UFO's come in different sizes? Artistic license? [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

I hope anyone in Italy will be able to help me in this
request: I am search for the original Italian versions of two "UFO" films. -- Il Disco Valente (The Flying Saucer) 1964 --- This film was shown on American television in the early 1970's in English but has literally disappeared. It starred Alberto Sordi in three roles in the film and was directed by Tinto Brass. It was more of a fantasy/comedy film but there were several striking scenes in it. If I can't find the American version, I hope that an original Italian version exists. -- Il Pianeta degli uomini spenti 1961 --- This film was re-titled in America as "Battle of the Worlds" and remains one of my "guilty pleasures." I just really enjoy this film, but don't know why. I would love to see the original Italian version as I already own the dubbed/chopped up American version. It starred Claude Raines in his last role, I beleive. Do either of these films languish on Italian video stores? I would really appreciate dubs of both or either film. Thanks for your help! Either "Flight Path" or "The Cat With Ten Lives" (I forget which) seems to say that one UFO with one pilot abducted several people in one visit (but it did not get away), so it must have room on board to store several abductees. The UFO in "The Square Triangle" seems to have had 2 crew. The UFO in "Ordeal" had room for 3 in its crew space (but one was Foster in an alien spacesuit). What was shown inside the UFO seems to me to show plenty of space for crew to move about, not merely a space barely big enough for one man. |

But if working with models, or drawings as in comics, or anything else than all real physical models and actors, it is easy for size- scale errors and inconsistencies to get in. I read that in the Dan Dare space stories in the old UK comic "Eagle", each frame was posed by actors to check for possiblilty and size/scale; modern comics are often not so careful. |
