There's kind of a shortage of UFO guests at this month's
Fanderson convention, isn't there?

I had heard from one source that Ayshea was going to be there,
but since this has never been officially announced I must
assume that she's not.

Yep, not much of a UFO focus,  but, its the first one I've been to  and possibly the only one I'll ever  attend. So, I'll see Mike Trims art, and show some of mine, and meet some other writers (no UFO ones though!)
You never now.. they might have news of the  film by then!  oh.. and hopefully  meet Gerry!
Hopefully my daughter will have dug out her Virgil puppet for me to take along!   (Although I really want a life-sized Ed Straker instead.)
I'll try to photograph any UFO items on display!

Yes, please do!  My only Fanderson convention was back in 2000,
and I was using 35mm film then...  :-)

I also hear from past conventions that Alan Shubrook is a "must-see",
if he is giving a talk.

In a desperate attempt to clear the backlog of UFO stories now lurking on my memory stick, I have now posted Breathless on my website.
Adult... NO sex.. but violent. For the September Challenge in the Writer's Forum.. A story that ends in a bar in Moscow.(based on Moonlight and Vodka by Chris de Burgh)
It is going up in chapters.. hopefully one a day.

I have a tendency to write stories and then forget I have done them....ooops!
Comments?? Anyone??

Re: New Story..old author

Griff
Hi Louise,

Just out of interest (okay, I am curious) what is you modus operandi when writing your stories...

Sure, this question probably belongs on the writers site, but it might also be of interest to other UFO writers here...

- Computer type
- WP/writing application
- Write longhand? All on computer, etc.
- Write on the move, where ever you can sit down and type
- Do you structure in your head, or do you write on the fly, or do you plan out every detail
- Do you write in silence, noisy environment, etc.

As I said, just curious... everyone seems to have a different M.O.

Regards, G

Re: New Story..old author

Lightcudder
Blimey Griff!.. what a question!

I do most of my writing straight onto computer (Word), but if I am teaching and have time ( ie, pupils doing other things..My job is .. complicated and hard to explain!) then I will quite often put down short passages in longhand 'scrawl' that only I can decipher, to be typed up later.

As for planning..
Well, Surrendered, my second `real ` story was started with the idea of Straker under the tree contemplating suicide and I worked around that idea in both directions.

Breathless.. there will be  Author's notes at the end of that story as with quite a few other stories now. The one I have just finished ( Moonlight) which is a follow-up started with the image of Ed pouring away the glass of vodka which he has with him at the end of Breathless.

Making any sense? I am a 'haphazard' writer at the best of times!

I write anywhere. work, lounge, dining room, classroom, bed (laptop!). Probably spending (at the moment about 5 hours a day.. to the detriment of my sketching !)(and housework!)And I like music while I write.. film themes, loud rock, anything heavy and powerful., .oh and the UFO CD as well!

I have planned out a story in great detail only twice,. and neither story is finished.. although I started them in March. I usually have a pretty good idea of where I want the story to go though and  then once it is 'up and running' it simply gets on with it. I merely do the typing!

(I actually have about five completed stories that are still waiting to be posted..I keep forgetting about them!)
It doesn't alway work though.. Dark Matters is a trilogy..a follow on from FarSight..and it stalled massively after the first two stories were completed. I realised that there was a HUGE plot error and it simply wasn't feasible.. so I am going to have to re-write it.
Any clearer??

The worse part of writing however, is when I have finished a story. I HATE that moment when it is done.. I get quite (no... VERY) attached to the story as I work on it and when I have to start a new one ( as I have done today) I always feel as if I have lost a friend. Drat.. I might have to put this into a thread in the Guild.. its quite an interesting point for other writers to talk about!
Hope that answers some of your questions Griff!

Louise!
Oh yes.. when I retire I hope to write professionally. I have an original plot idea for a teenage series alrady ( as well as a Chick-lit plot!).. But UFO is my real focus at the moment..( with a tiny touch of Thunderbirds occasionally!.. although I get in trouble for being mean to Alan)

And if there are any other writers out there......Get in touch!!Please!

The first part of this is now complete. It gets unpleasant later in Part 2. (just in case you don't like reading graphic violence.)

Breathless is now nearly complete. Only the epilogue to post tomorrow. I would be grateful for any feedback...e.g.

Has anyone read it?

Does it work better posting in daily chapters?

(Is there any point in carrying on writing??)
(you can always email me if you want!)

Oh and there is a follow-on story, (no violence this time) involving the same two characters. Called Moonlight. If I get any feedback I will post that as well.

Re: New Story..old author

andelendir
Hi,

I can well understand Louise's frustration with writing UFO fanfiction. Her "Breathless" is certainly one of the most outstanding short stories - not just UFO, but fiction in general - that I have read in a long while, and to all appearances no one reads such excellent stories, no one deigns to comment, or applaud.

UFO writers are in a particularly bad limbo there, it is not a popular fandom on the large fanfiction sites, most users there don't even know what UFO is, as it ran so long ago, and unlike with the fans of other Gerry Anderson programs the UFO fangroup is rather tight-lipped where it comes to acknowledging that there are writers out there trying to carry the torch.

It is noticable that many UFO writers turn rather soon towards more rewarding fandoms, fandoms where they get feedback from the fans and the occasional virtual clap on the shoulder for doing a good and amusing story for everyone to enjoy.

So - writers not just need readers, they also need feedback, to keep going. If the UFO fans as a group, and I guess a lot of them are on this list, wish to have those stories keep coming, then maybe a little, just a tiny bit, more open enthusiasm might be warranted.

Just a stray thought...

An Delen Dir

Hi Louise,

I always enjoy reading all your work.

Personally, I am not bothered whether I read the whole in one sitting, or a chapter at a time. I tend to do all my reading at the weekends, so I get it all in one sitting...

Keep it up!!!

Rgds, Griff

Posted the Epilogue tonight ( out all day tomorrow) Thankyou for the feedback and encouragement, and to AnDelenDir for her input. Her story

One Red Square

http://archiveofourown.org/works/120619

precedes the next story in my series (Moonlight) which I shall start posting on Monday .. although there will be slight pause over the weekend while I am enjoying myself in Bristol!
And Griff, the Interceptor Pilot story is.. partially finished.. I will get round to doing it soon I hope!
