New UFO series/movie

Kevin Bulmer
Has everything gone cold on the new TV show/movie? I haven't heard anything
for months.

If it has died, what do you all think about the idea of a movie? Would it
work? There's an awful lot of setup to do in two hours to bring new people
up to speed and you don't want to bore existing fans. Likewise, as far as
I'm concerned, the fans want to see the interceptors, mobiles and Skydiver
in action (am I right?).

I'm keen to hear people's thoughts.

Thanks,

Kevin Bulmer

I haven't heard anything in a while either. Just as well... the thought
of the people behind "The New Twilight Zone" doing a UFO remake didn't
exactly inspire confidence...

I haven't seen any updates regarding Trilogy
Entertainment's remake of UFO. I believe the article
referenced in the following link came out in October
2003.

What about the people who won multiple Emmys for the new "Outer Limits?"

I probably only watched 1-2 dozen episodes of The New Outer Limits,
and it seemed very rare that I felt satisfied by the end of the
episode. So I still don't have any desire to have these folks
create a UFO remake -- Emmys or not!

Was there a prefered option between a movie or series with the
prospective producers of the new UFO. What costs more?

I think they were talking about a TV series.
The cost depends on how you assess it. If you are talking about the price
per minute, the TV series would have to be cheaper given that the cost of
building models (real or CGI) would be recouped over 26 (say) episodes.
However, a TV budget is normally significantly less than a movie anyway,
with some notable exceptions. It is rare for TV to spend more than $1m per
episode which with most US series would mean 26 hours of footage for $26m
while most effects driven movies run around 2 hours for upwards of $100m.
The new War of the Worlds movie, incidentally, has the largest approved
shooting budget ever at $200m.

They seem to be remaking almost anything these days,it's a wonder due
to UFO's unusual storyline and today's shortage of original creative
ideas for any new Sci-Fi series' that someone hasn't had a go at it.
Maybe because hardly any young people today have heard of UFO,and too
few adults is the reason for lack of interest in a new version.

I think that's right. 'classic' sci-fi is always more likely to get the remake treatment
than 'cult' sci-fi.

Gerry Anderson only really made one classic series, let's be honest - and come to
think of it, that was the one that was turned into a film in recent years, which seems
to support my point! :D

a couple of dozen different people have contributed to this email list since
last Friday. They're here because they remember the show and it generated
enough enthusiasm that they sought out the group. Product Enterprise are
selling UFO collectibles and expanding their range (which implies that they
are selling).

If we assume that a new movie would have to find a whole new audience, the
producers would need to be very careful to try and capture the elements of
the original series that make us devoted fans. For me, a lot of that is the
truly brilliant design work of the craft.

My feeling is that UFO could find a new audience as a 2hour+ movie using the
Foster storyline (not him, but another new recruit) as a basis to introduce
the viewer to the concept of SHADO. This could be done carefully to avoid
boring the old hands but explaining a lot of material to new people and
giving us space for a few knowing winks to those in the know.

For me it comes back to the hardware. That provides its own problems of
course. There are far more satellites in orbit now, including private ones.
SID might be a bit more obvious. SID & Moonbase would be at risk of
discovery from amateur astronomers. Mobile phones, security cameras and the
Internet also impact on the scenario.

If it worked as a movie, it might well spin off into a new TV series.

Thoughts?

They did – didn't anyone see Men in Black? :D SHADO for the new
century even down to the (much improved) amnesia device. And the new
Foster-style recruit.

I'd really like to believe this UFO fan base would be in the producers
/ screenwriters / directors minds if a new UFO movie got made... but
logic refuses to allow me to do so. There might be some lip-service
paid to the original fan base during shooting / at the time of release
(as with Thunderbirds) but the overriding business strategy would be
to develop something that got bums on seats. If a movie alienated –
what? 5000 original fans? 10,000 original fans...? tough. We don't
have the power of Star Trek fans, for an obvious example. I'd like to
believe differently, but I can't. :( We'd maybe get a few knowing
winks – like in Thunderbirds – but other than that...

I must be getting an early form of Alzhiemer's(GOD forbid). I never made the connection between MIB and SHADO. Of course MIB had more aliens, and SHADO only had one type of alien and one type of UFO. Thank you for making the connection for me.
