I recall an attempt was made a number of years ago to produce an
updated series. Unfortunately this project had to be shelved due to a lack of funding as it was believed that the potential audience would be quite small. In light of the recent release of the series on DVD I was wondering if the time is right for someone to explore the possibilities of a new series? |

I was interested in to read a recent suggestion that now, what with the 'UFO' series now released on DVD, it might be a good idea to do a new series. The last I heard on a new 'UFO' series was at the Eclectic 21 Convention at Leicester's Holiday Inn in May 2001 when Ed Bishop announced that a German production company were interested in him reprising the role of Ed Straker in a new series if they could buy the rights from Carlton. I for one would welcome a new series & think it would be a good idea if they either started it from scratch & remade the original series - this is what is going to be done with 'Battlestar Galactica' carried on the original series with Straker reactivating SHADO when Earth is faced with a new alien menace. I always thought it would be a good twist if the aliens from the original series were actually from Earth's future & were trying to undo the pollution that was causing their future race to die but in doing so were actually bringing the disease from the future into the present. A reimagining suitable for 'Planet Of The Apes' perhaps but maybe not 'UFO'? A new series - I'd prefer a motion picture personally! - should reflect the kitsch production design of the original - how about Tim Burton directing? SFX would be an improvement on the - albeit excellent - originals but I wouldn't want to see a CGI overload; you can still do some good stuff with models! 'UFO' is my favourite SF TV series but, unlike 'Star Trek' which I don't think is as good, it's not as well known these days so I don't think you could just pick it up from where it left off with the original cast like 'Star Trek:The Motion Picture' - it's too long since it was last on. I feel that something like 'Men In Black' has stolen mercilessly from 'UFO' but is nowhere near as good as well. I'm interested in writing a 'UFO' story which could be developed as a screenplay. I'm keen to put in the first two scenes of the 'Identified' episode & a sizeable chunk of 'Exposed' but have a problem with what to do with the Carlin character from the 1st scene as the Foster character developed more in the series - I even thought of killing off Carlin in the first scene, not killing off Leila Carlin & making her Janna Wade who eventually turns out to be Virginia Lake! I'm thinking now of doing more of a 007/Mission:Impossible spin on the original with Foster as a Bond/Ethan Hunt style agent but still keeping the ensemble feel of the original series & not just making them supporting characters. I'd be interested in knowing people's thoughts on a new series and/or my spin on the original & I hope I haven't upset too many fans of the original with some of my radical ideas! As two the the ideas(?) about a new UFO series I can only say, the use of
certain ...er...weeds for smoking and certain pharmacological products for recreational use are apparently not only dangerous to the health of the user but also the creative process as these ideas(?) prove. Stick with the original idea. Every remake that has tried to redo the original Idea has sucked big time(imho). But that is just my opinion. James K.
