Norma Ronald

pointy100
I know that it's difficult to find out much about Norma as she wasn't a
very prolific actor. There seems to be a vague consensus that she died
in 1993. However I can find no more specific date nor any reference to
the cause of death.
I have recently come across a couple of obituaries of her husband, the
actor Edward Judd (who died in 2009), which state that she survives him.
For example:

Judd's first wife, the actress Gene Anderson, who died in 1965, appeared
alongside him in the films The Shakedown (1959) and The Day the Earth
Caught Fire, and a 1958 episode of the television adventure series White
Hunter. He is survived by his second wife, the actress Norma Ronald,
best known for her roles as Mildred Murfin in the radio comedy The Men
from the Ministry and the secretary Kay Lingard in The Plane Makers and
its sequel, The Power Game.
Does anyone have any more definitive information?
David

Hi,

Yes, I would also very interested to hear anything further about Norma Ronald.

The only thing I can add is that she had - I believe - two children... I believe she was pregnant between the break in production of UFO. I also believe she died of cancer.

Norma was a very versatile and natural actress - I always adored her as Miss Ealand.

I wish I knew more...

Regards, Griff

I'm inclined to believe she died as reported in 1993 with those  obits sating she is alive a sign of sloppy cut and pasting from a dodgy source.

Griff, i agree she was a natural and I thought quite bewitching. Her limited appearances in UFO just make her all the more mysterious and alluring.

I found this:

http://www.trueknowledge.com/q/when_was_norma_ronald_born

Make of it what you will. Could be tosh but it is plausible. Two years older than her Wiki entry.

There's this low-res image of her with Edward and one daughter (there's only about 12 in the known universe so I guess many have seen it):

http://www.fanpix.net/picture-gallery/norma-ronald-picture-15504579.htm

Was her pregnancy  the reason for her replacement by  that actress whose name I forget in that episode which I also forget the name of?

Kevin: do you have a source for the cancer information by any chance?

Re: Norma Ronald

James Killian
Norma was a very nice person.  She was one of the few of the cast I manage to
communicate with.  Her illness was lukemia.  And she did sadly die from it in
1993.  A odd bit of info about her was while she was a actress she was not
comfortable being photographed so working on films and TV shows was harder for
her than doing stage work or doing voice overs or radio plays.

Re: Norma Ronald

James,

Thanks for those details. Really good to have some more reliable information. So she would have been about 58 or 60 when she died and I guess her youngest was about 23 then.

I think I learned more about Norma in the past 24 hours than in the previous 40 years!

Sad to hear she passed. Even though her screen time in UFO was limited, she made an impression. She made Miss Ealand seem competent, capable, intelligent, likeable and warm.

She had to be one of Straker's most trusted operatives. She not only handled studio business but knew the secrets of SHADO. She could run interference with a blustery Henderson, dodge nosy reporters ( usually ), direct and misdirect, watch for an incoming UFO without panicking, and even handle Straker in one of his moods without losing her unflappable composure.

Would have been nice to have seen a storyline which involved Miss Ealand more. A team up between her and Freeman, Foster, Straker or Lake. Perhaps something similar to Lake and Straker being the only ones unaffected in "Timelash". Wouldn't it have been nifty to have a story were the aliens have come up with some macguffin that incapacitated males but, through some miscalculation, was ineffective against females. That could have left the very capable ladies in charge of the entire operation of SHADO whilst coming up with a solution to the alien plot. While this wouldn't seem a radical idea now, it would have been quite revolutionary in 1970.
