Okay, for all you experienced European travellers, I'm still trying
to figure out the best option for me to insert a Saturday stopover at the Fanderson Century 21 convention in Birmingham England while I'm on my way to a business trip in the Ukraine the following week. Basically, the airplane flights out of Birmingham seem risky to me. I can only be at this convention on Saturday, because I *need* to be in Vienna at 13:00 on Sunday to catch a flight to the Ukraine. To do this, I seemingly have 2 options: 1) Fly from Birmingham to Vienna on Sunday morning. All the flights available leave around 6-7 AM, have a connecting flight in Frankfurt or Munich, and arrive in Vienna around noon. This option is good for me in terms of getting a good night's sleep on Saturday night, but the problem is that the layovers in Frankfurt/Munich & Vienna are only about an hour long, which don't seem long enough to me -- it seems like it would be very likely that I would either miss a flight or my luggage wouldn't arrive with me. 2) I could take a coach bus from Birmingham to London Heathrow around midnight-2 AM on Saturday night/Sunday morning, and then take a direct flight from London to Vienna. This would give me several hours margin on getting to Heathrow on time, and I would have a 4 hour layover in Vienna, which all seems very safe to me in terms of making my flights and my luggage making it. However, there won't be much sleep that night! Any advice would be appreciated! -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |
Hi Marc
I feel slightly nervous about giving you advice because I' emigrated to Canada just over a year ago. But based on my 40 years in the UK here goes. I don't think flying out of Birmingham is any more risky than Heathrow. It's an international airport. And in my experience, the lightly smaller airports in Europe are much more reliable than the massive ones. The buget airlines are good and realiable and they fly out out places like Birmingham or Luton. You might want to look at a train to Luton and an EasyJet flight to Vienna (See the EasyJet website and the BritishRail website). I am going to go and look it up after I send this message.... My second point would be that the train to London would be quicker than a coach bus. But at that time of night I am not sure if the there will be a suitable train. If there was I'd take it. Unlike the US and Canada, trains in the UK travel much faster than road traffic. Both of the above pieces of advice probably don't help you. If you are just going to choose between the two options you gave then I guess I'd go with the second. Simply because you might not get your luggage through in time if you only have an hour. What time is the direct flight to Heathrow? Do you really need to set off from Brum at 2 am, could you set off later? Hope this helps a little Julia |

My apologies to the list. I meant to send the last message to Marc not to
everyone. Julia |
By the way, while we're talking about Century 21 (sorta), for those
of you who are going, I have it on good authority that Ed Bishop is planning on being there on both Saturday & Sunday. -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |

Sorry, I have no experience of flying around Europe (I don't get paid enough
for that!) It sounds like you won't have time to stop off in Watford, which is a shame as I could show you one or two SHADO locations. Still, good luck, Grant. -----Original Message----- From: Marc Martin [mailto:[hidden email]] Sent: 19 August 2000 15:38 To: [hidden email] Subject: [SHADO] OT: Century 21 Travel Advice Okay, for all you experienced European travellers, I'm still trying to figure out the best option for me to insert a Saturday stopover at the Fanderson Century 21 convention in Birmingham England while I'm on my way to a business trip in the Ukraine the following week.
