Went to see the Tbirds movie yesterday. Okay - it's a kid's movie so take
along a kid - preferably one under 13. (Not enough explosions to suit older kids.) If you liked Spykids, you'll probably like Thunderbirds. Had the look and feel of the original - sets, models/CGI, etc. The adults were about as emotionally thrilling as puppets. The stars were the three kids (Alan Tracy, Tin-tin and Brain's kid whose name escapes me) along with Lady P and Parker and the Thunderbird ships (of course). Comments from the single teenager in the audience - 'I don't care how much power you put behind one of those things - it won't fly! But the space station was good and they didn't use oxygen pills.' Was Anthony Edwards ( the doc from ER) in the film? His casting as "Brains" was a HUGE deal when the film was first announced. Was he cut out completely? __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! Mail - Send 10MB messages! http://promotions.yahoo.com/new_mail |
He was certainly in the "Making of" enthusing about it so I guess he was
in the "Made" as well... Nick ultramannick wrote: > Was Anthony Edwards ( the doc from ER) in the film? > His casting as "Brains" was a HUGE deal when the film > was first announced. He wasn't exactly the "Brains" you remember, but he was very good nonetheless. -- Jonathan Andrew Sheen http://www.leviathanstudios.com Leviathan of the GEI (Detached.) I didn't get the feeling that the three kids gelled on screen...could've been cast better. I think some that is also due to a lack of tightness in both the dialogue for them and the directing. Definately had the feel of the '60s series. My son even thought he saw, on one close-up of hands at the controls, strings attached to them. I didn't see it, but will check it out again if I ever see it again. I did notice that Sylvia Anderson was in the trailing credits as a consultant. (Btw, the opening credits sucked!!) MHO, Dan |

In Side Joke Spoiler
Scroll Down to See. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The inside joke: As you may remember form the original series, when ever a close up was need of a characters hand, a real human hand was used. Well in a shot where the three children are leaving Tracy Island aboard Thunderbird One, an actual puppets hand, strings and all, reaches out and places its hamd on the thrust lever. It is only on screen for a second but in a reverse joke I found it amusing. I hope to submit a review later. Thanks JMD |

I heard an interview with Jonathan Frakes a couple of weeks ago in which he confirmed that he DID use a puppet hand for a close up, as a kind of homage to the old TV series in which Gerry Anderson famously used human hands in close up shots. I laughed, because I remember Gerry being asked once during a chatroom interview if he'd considered doing the same thing in UFO - which brings us neatly back on topic :D |

The sad thing is they have marketed it at kids who where never
around to see the original series. Those who enjoyed Thunderbirds are now 30+. If the same walking filofax`s get hold of UFO you can bet it will be a bad rehash looking like the X-Files meets Battlestar Galatica... But we must live in hope somewhere, someone has an ounce of vision, not just how much cash can be scamed before the hype wares off. |

I really liked Deborah's critique of TBs and I felt she echoed what my
opinion of the trailer was. A kids' movie with little to interest an adult. I was also interested in the quote she passed along from the teenager about the space hardware: 'I don't care how much power you put behind one of those things - it won't fly!" However, seeing as how TBs is so juvenile it scares me to think about what they might do to UFO...... Pam |

The best one I have seen in regards to this movie was a quote that said:
"Bring back the puppets." James K. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

I thought this quote said it all in regards to what has happened to TBs:
"The sad thing is they have marketed it at kids who where never around to see the original series. Those who enjoyed Thunderbirds are now 30+." .....and what could happen to UFO if the wrong people get their paws on it...... Pam |

Trailers were not on Shrek 2 or Harry Potter. The only kids picture the trailer was programmed with was Garfield The Movie, which was a minor hit. Opening weekend was embarrassing for this picture. The largest crowd in my theatre for Thunderbirds was 21, and I was playing it in a 500 seat house!!! Shrek 2 and Harry Potter were still going strong. Thunderbirds is a classic "two weeker". In 2 weeks it will be out of the theatres. With luck they will re-release it in the fall. It's a shame because it really was a fun picture and a nice prequel to the series. Sorry for rambling on. Mis-marketed is right! It's up with the diaster of "Beetlejuice!" The was begun as a serious interpretation of the original series...but had to quickly re-tooled as a tweener film ala "Spy Kids." The ships--The Thunderbirds themselves--are only on the screen for about 10 minutes. JF __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! You know, I read about this movie just before going
to the Comic-Con. I was telling Marc before I went to the panel with Trey and Matt presenting some clips, I felt it would be blasphemous; but had to check it out given who the two producers are!! I left with tears in my eyes from laughter!!! The clip on the apple site is lame compared to the other scenes they showed at the panel discussion!!! As Matt and Trey talked about the difficulties of working with puppets, they definately had a reverance for Gerry Anderson's work. They had the beginning and end of the film in the can, however, like they do the SP episodes, they hadn't even written the middle of the movie! I'm so looking forward to this movie!!
