Orbital Mechanics

rwb81118

Please correct me if I am wrong! Having not seen the show in
30 years, I recall that all the launches to moonbase were from Cape
Kennedy and never from England. This makes sense based on what I
vaguely remember of Orbital Mechanics for translunar injection and
conservation of fuel.
However, from what I remember in at least one of the shows, SID
had to be fixed by launching a vehicle from Moonbase as they could
not reach it from Earth. This did not seem to make any sense to me
as that meant that SID did not fly in an orbit that a spacecraft
launched from earth, could intercept for repairs. Can someone
comment on this or do I have early Alzhimers?

Thank you,
Mike

The SID repair job in THE MAN WHO CAME BACK was launched from
the Earth, not the moon. SID appears to be in low earth orbit,
even though the UFO scripts/writers guide indicates that it
is in geosynchronous earth orbit.

In the episode CLOSE UP, they launched the B142 space probe
from Earth, but then fitted it with special hardware from
a lunar module launched from Moonbase.

Oh, and the SHADO trips to/from Moonbase in the Lunar Carrier/Module
appeared to me to be taking off from England. At least, it seemed
like in a few episodes that the SHADO personel were driving to some
airbase near London.

Marc,
Thank you for the info. I will be ordering this week the UFO DVD series to see these great shows again. I still think it is the most engaging show I ever saw. Despite the fact that the show's basic theme may seem depressing in that earth was being attacked, it really had a positive underlying plot.
Thanks again,
Mike

Marc,
Now that you mention it, I think you were correct. I just don't know if launching from England, would be plausible in getting to the moon. I guess it depends on how easy it would be to get into the right orbit.
Thanks again for the great job you do as moderator.

Note that if you're in the US, you can order from DeepDiscountDvd.com
and get the whole series for US$72.

Also, at some point in the future it appears that A&E will be
discontinuing the UFO DVDs, as I see that they are closing
out some of their Space:1999 & The Saint discs... so at that
point the UFO megaset might become REALLY cheap...

Well, don't analyze things too closely -- UFO lacks plausibility in
the space travel/propulsion area in general. The vehicles they
use to get around are so small and have so little room for fuel,
that they must be using some sort of advanced propulsion that
doesn't exist even today... or if it does, it's still a secret
technology being used at Area 51... :-)

Marc,
Thanks again for the info. Here in the US, I have not seen any ads or information about the UFO DVD set. I only became aware of it from this group.
Thanks,
Mike

You could launch there from England, it's just a bit easier launching
from more equatorial regions. There earth's rotation gives you a little
added velocity when launching eastward.

The $72 set at DeepDiscountDvd.com contains all 26 UFO episodes. UFO
was released two different ways in the USA:

a) two sets containing 13 episodes each
b) "UFO Megaset" containing all 26 episodes

These days, it is usually cheaper to buy the UFO Megaset than to
buy the 2 sets. Also, the Megaset has better packaging, with
a separate plastic case for each disc.

Netflix has the shows to rent. They're on my queue list, behind "Star

Several of us on this list have bought from a particular seller on ebay for
under $80.
That includes ALL eight discs AND shipping.
I don't remember the name of the seller (maybe someone else will). And he
offered SEVERAL sets in recent months. Not sure if he still has any.
