PAL DvD playback...

Nektu
I have a question...I own a Sony DVP-s7700 from that is a converted Japanese
unit. A friend from the UK sent me a disc to try on my player, because he
said that it should work. I mentioned to him that I knew UFO was coming out
there in the next few months. It was the first volume of Thunderbirds from
Carlton. It did play back, but not in color. There did seem to be a slight
flicker, or movement in the video playback as well. The menus, extra
features, and the audio seemed superior to A&E's sets in every aspect.
Is the problem that my monitor is only NTSC? Why would it play back at all,
then? The disc is encoded for region 2...
Any thoughts?....
all the best,
Ken

When I playback my UK DVDs on my APEX, it plays just fine on my
American TV when I set the output to "NTSC". When I set the output
to "PAL", then I get a black&white, rolling picture. So I assume
that your Sony is ignoring the region encoding, and outputting a PAL
signal. And what you'd need is either a NTSC->PAL converter or a
multistandard TV set or a DVD player with a built-in NTSC->PAL
converter. Here's a place which sells all three, if you want to
compare prices, features, and quality:
