Pinewood Studios - 1985

Bill Cotter
A number of years ago I posted some pictures I took of Pinewood Studios that I took when I was working there. I rescanned them at a higher resolution and have updated them online. They're at http://www.billcotter.com/places/pinewood.htm.

Hope you enjoy them.

Bill

Just remove the last period from the link and it should work

It's the extra period at the end -- remove it, and you get a link that does work:

That work, thanks :)  I am surprised about the not keeping sets policy.  The dock scene you mentioned in the spy who loved me looked very similar to the 'you only live twice' ending set, from where they shoot and recover the space craft.  I thought they would just adjust the existing set.

BTW, I am pretty sure the little helicopter used in you only live twice is hanging at what is now called Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida.  It was formerly called Disney MGM Studios, which are partners with United Artists, the makers of the James Bond franchise.

Bill,
I remember when you first posted these.  Thanks for updating them.  They look great!  And really bring back certain scenes from UFO!
Yours,
Denise

As a Bond film fan (as well as an 'Anderfan' & a general film buff), i couldn't let this one go.
I'll leave it to Wikipedia to explain:-
Quote "The stage was originally conceived in 1976 by production designer Ken Adam to house the set he had designed for the interior of the Liparus supertanker in the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me. The stage was christened the "007 Stage" on December 1976...In contrast to the (temporary) volcano crater set Adam had built for You Only Live Twice in 1966, the 007 Stage would be a permanent structure that could be rented out to other productions."

Just watching The Spy you loved me, that is some stage :)

I always wondered about Shane Rimmer.  He was in UFO, The Spy who loved me, one of the superman and batman movies.  I just looked at his imdb biography, he was born in Canada, but judging by the movies he is in, sounds like a transplant like Ed Bishop, to play American roles in British movies, since he doesn't have a British accent :)

True, he was amongst a small band of jobbing American/Canadian character actors who almost always, if not always, played Americans in UK based productions (and often theatre). Their presence was one strong suggestion that a film was based in the UK despite any other indications.

Ed Bishop, Shane Rimmer, David Healey, Matt Zimmerman, Al Mancini, were amongst the most ubiquitous of this group in the 60s and 70s. Off hand I can't remember any women in quite the same position. American female character roles tended to be either played by British actresses or imported Americans.

Donald Sutherland might have become a regular in the group if he hadn't hit the big time, as might Stuart Damon if he hadn't returned to the US - but they were more obviously leading men types anyway.

Of course there had long been Hollywood stars on the wane who would  come over to star in British films, some of them quite frequently, but that's not quite the same thing.

Regards
John
