I read in Sci Fi Weekly about a new Silva Screen SF compilation which
includes music from Journey to the Far Side of the Sun. http://www.scifi.com/sfw/issue193/ Click on Sound Space Here's some more info: The second disc has two significant subsections. "Journeys into Space" contains compositions from The Last Starfighter, Silent Running, Journey to the Far Side of the Sun and the Lost in Space motion picture, while "Destruction From the Sky" spotlights the music of Meteor, Deep Impact and Armageddon. The platter also features a suite from Galaxy Quest along with various cues from Things to Come, The Matrix and Star Wars: Episode 1--The Phantom Menace. All 27 works are performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Paul Bateman and Nic Raine. The liner notes--written by album producer James Fitzpatrick--provide brief synopses of the various dramas plus a few informative sentences about each tune. Like the two earlier volumes, Space 3: Beyond the Final Frontier is packaged in a cardboard slipcase. That's all it says about the cues from JTTFSOTS, maybe its the title music? I know a bunch of clips were used in UFO from all the UFO/Barry Gray people here (Thank you!) The Sci Fi Weekly email newsletter I get also included an ad for the upcoming Space 1999 DVD's! : -) Later! |

I don't own this particular CD, but I do know that the music from "Journey to the Far Side of the Sun" is not the original music, but a re-recording. For me, that makes the difference between buying it and not buying it... -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |

It runs 5.57 minutes and includes 3 sections: - Main Theme - Sleeping Astronauts (which, yes was heard in UFO) - Finale "Main Theme", is, quite predictably, the section of music heard over the opening titles of the film. The "Sleeping Astronauts" track is from about mid-way through the film where the astronauts put themselves into extended sleep on their journey to the new planet. Yes, it is probably best known to UFO fans for its re-use as the music that underscores the scene in "Close Up" of the astronauts installing the equipment into the B142 space probe "Finale" is a short section of music that accompanies Jason Webb back into the nursing home, (after the destruction of the Eurosec base), and brings him face to face with his own reality, (and the closing credits of the film, short as they are). It's not a bad rendition; "Sleeping Astronauts" is a little odd, rendered in different manner to Barry Gray's original, but it's quite recognisable nonetheless. The other 2 tracks are pretty faithful reproductions of the original score or so I thought the first time I heard it. My main dislike stems from the tempo of the music being too fast for the pieces, (which **may** be due to the arrangers using a PAL video recording to source the music from the film by ear for their own re-arrangements; I may be wrong on this account so don't take it as gospel, but it would account for the slightly faster-sounding music). All in all it's a good 2 disc set, although the Anderson content is light; if anyone were to be buying it for the GA content alone, I'd probably warn them not to invest in it....but the mix and variations of other SF material is pretty good. Space 3: Beyond The Final Frontier Silva Screen Records (US) 2000 SSD 1112 - 6 stars out of 10 for GA rendition - 4 stars out of 10 for GA value - 7 stars out of 10 for general SF value Kelly Kelly Patrick Lannan The Gerry Anderson Memorabilia Site <[hidden email]> http://www.users.bigpond.com/BASE_KOALA/GA.Memorabilia/Infornation.html |
