I don't think Alex Freeman was meant to be portrayed as blind. He
was wearing sun shades a lot in the first episode of the series
because he was part of the crew piloting the computer equipment to
SHADO control.
As for the other questions, I don't know about the machine bazooka
from "Timelash," but there are a lot of graphics, blueprints and
FAQs at www.ufoseries.com that might answer your question about the
conections.

Er, Alec Freeman was responsible to taking off and flying 'Seagull-X-Ray'
SHADO's supersonic transport with SHADO's crown jewels (the Utronic Detection
equipment) and high ranking SHADO consulting technical staff... He was just
wearing sun-glasses as do most pilots.... Apart from wearing sunglasses,
whatever lead you to believe he was blind?
