I'd like to see Donald Bellisario (JAG) take it on. Although it would
probably take on a slightly different form than what we've come to love from the original, I think he'd do a great job with it. What makes you think that Spelling would be interested? UFO was cancelled due to poor ratings, and video sales have been poor in the USA. It doesn't sound like a recipe for success to me! Besides, most of these modern remakes for 1960's TV shows have ended up to be disasters... > Has anyone asked Mr. Anderson such a question? Or thought of it? Yes, that question has been asked of Gerry Anderson at every Fanderson convention, and I suspect he gets asked such questions daily by fan letters. Marc Your use of Yahoo! The specific question... Aaron Spelling??
You say that Gerry Anderson has been specifically asked in the past by fans, if Aaron Spelling had been asked about the show's market potential?? Thanks [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

>The specific question... Aaron Spelling??
No, I'm sure that nobody has mentioned Aaron Spelling... and why would they? It's not like he's much into science fiction. I think if Aaron Spelling did a UFO remake, I probably wouldn't even watch it! I mean, the last Aaron Spelling show I watched was THE LOVE BOAT -- and that was 1977! >You say that Gerry Anderson has been specifically asked in the past by fans, >if Aaron Spelling had been asked about the show's market potential?? Market potential does not equal quality. I tend to watch shows because they are GOOD, not because they are popular. Like this year, one of my favorite shows was FIREFLY. Good show, but nobody was watching it, and it lasted fewer episodes than UFO did... (and if the guy who did FIREFLY did a UFO remake, you can be sure that I would watch it!) Marc |

Only Aaron Spelling knows whether Aaron Spelling would be interested in
Sci-Fi, It is highly presumptuous of anyone to say otherwise, but... How do we know whether he might entertain such a thought unless he is ASKED?? Isn't it just worth a try? I am sure if Gerry Anderson were approached in the right sort of way concerning such an idea towards finding a substantial financial resource, that this would at least have a chance.. Remember also.... ILM is also in California, and it would be easier to make FX stuff there-- even like UFO style (collaboration between Lucas & Spelling & Anderson??) I'm sure he wouldn't be shy about asking such a thing of anyone of Mr. Spelling's stature :) ESPECIALLY if he saw that MANY UFO fans were enthusiastic :) Thanks [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
...and we can get Tori Spelling to play Lt Ellis.. and perhaps Luke Perri to play Col. Foster... HEY this could really work!! ;O)
Lets get a petition together *stat*!! >I'm sure he wouldn't be shy about asking such a thing of anyone of Mr.
>Spelling's stature :) ESPECIALLY if he saw that MANY UFO fans were enthusiastic :) And how many is "many"? Like I said before, sales of UFO DVDs have been POOR. Several years ago there was a major fan effort put forth to resurrect UFO in Australia, and despite begging & pleading, we got about 40 letters total from fans. Not hardly enough to catch anyone's interest... and it didn't! Also, I'd question the timing of it -- science fiction appears to be going through a lull right now. The Star Wars and Star Trek franchises are making less money than they used to, most of the "big" science fiction shows on TV have been recently cancelled or are about to be due to low ratings (X-Files, Farscape, Buffy, Enterprise). Even the so-called "Sci-Fi Channel" is seemingly abandoning science fiction. Seems like Aaron Spelling would me more interested in doing "Joe Millionaire 2" than "UFO 2"... Marc |

What age group interests- wise do you envision the show as attracting
anyways? I'm thinking a much wider age range than I believe you may be here... Thanks [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

Simple solution-- Apply today's market forces- with its Tie-In products
(models, toys, etc.), that will sell in conjunction with any idea pilot for a UFO film/TV series project, updated for a 2003 and later market and age group :) Thanks [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

Also, I'd question the timing of it -- science fiction appears to be going through a lull right now. I know this might sound slanderous, but do we have to think of it as science fiction? With movies and TV these days it could almost be defined as drama. Let's step away from the box for a moment and look at it from a "drama" point of view rather than sci-fi. Mary |
Mary,
That is an excellent comment. I think selling it as a drama that is sci-fi based might just work. I've never seen any problem with selling a show like this as a drama. Is the X-Files strictly sci-fi, or is it drama as well? I would argue it is both and I think the best thing for all Science Fiction producers and writers would be to sell their works to networks and production studios on the "drama" side of the story rather than the "greasy kid stuff" of sci-fi. Okay, I've been away three days so this is a bit late to put my tupence
or two cents worth in but here goes anyway. Just because fans are enthusiatic about something doesn't mean it will be made anytime soon if at all. Fans were very enthusiatic about the making of the next Star Wars film after Return of the Jedi but it didn't get made for 20 years and the reason wasn't because Lucas Arts was waiting for the tech to make. The same goes for the the next Indiana Jones film but Speillberg on the wrong track with Young Indiana Jones and tried to used it as a tool to teach history rather than tell a exciting story and went off and pouted for years when it got cancelled. The problem is Fans get enthusiatic about anything having to do with their favor show. If fans being enthusiatic about something is all it took Spelling could remake Fantastic Journey, or Star Maidens, or Quark for that matter. What a producer wants to make is something that he is enthusiatic about and that is usually something he thinks will earn big money at the boxoffice. This doesn't always happen but it is the most likely reason. So if you can give Mr. Spelling or any other producer proof positive that make a movie or a new TV version of UFO will give them a boxoffice hit making back its production cost its first weekend and then raking in say a Billion dollars or more it will get made. But don't make promises for other fans than your self as they might not show up because the original cast isn't in it or they don't like who is cast to play their favorite character, or the they turned it into a comedy. Don't get me wrong I'd love to see a UFO film or series but I want it done right and the track record for that happening are very slim. James K. Me to Yuchtar. James K.(considering how to let the programmers at Fox know the real him, the idea about kicking them into a running jet engine at Boeing perhaps?) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
