I have no idea what you are talking about, but I'll be interested
to learn more!

Once there was a convention in So Cal. (EquiCon 74?) And there
was a room dedicated to SHADO and contained the mock-up of
Straker's office and various displays. My 2 room-mates were there
as moon-base operatives (yeah, wrong center, but boy, did they get
the stares!) and since I am rather more.. stout of build, I wore
an Alien flightsuit and helmet. The helmet had a one-way
faceplate, and because the suit was very hot and I kept very
still, many visitors were fooled into thinking I was one of the
several mannequins.

Later that night, there was a party in the display room. It was
to have been a birthday party for Ed Bishop but he had conflicting
filming schedule and was unable to attend the Con. They decuided
to hold the party anyhow and show episodes of UFO on a big screen.

At one point during the party, there was a knock at the door and
lo and behold, 'Mr Sulu' walked in. He had just come from the
ConSuite party where they had run out of booze, and he was touring
the corridors, looking for other parties. He found us.

The man has my profound admiration for what he did that night...
an actor, much sought after on his own merits, chose to spend time
with a group of 'fans' of a completely different series. He
laughed and chatted and had fruit-punch and birthday cake and even
watched UFO episodes with us.

He was very appreciative of the silver-clad operatives and amused
by the token Alien. He was the one to say that it was a
responsibilty of the crew of the Enterprise to try to promote
peaceful relations among differing folk and he felt that he was
obigated to make the first overtures of peace by shaking the
Alien's hand, which he did to the joy of the many shutter-bugs.

Because I had spent the entire day 'in garb' I hadn't combed my hair
or fixed my face and there was _no_ way I was removing that helmet at
that party! George thought that was funny.

Anyhow, I just thought it was very nice of him to stay with us for
as long as he did, and for him to 'play along' with the SHADO
theme.

Thanks for that story! I don't think I've ever seen any photos
from this event...

I think Ed Bishop actually made it to Equicon 74 -- at least,
I got an email earlier this year from someone who audiotaped
Ed Bishop at this con (still waiting for a copy so I can turn
it into an MP3 and upload it)

Meren, that was cool. I wish I had been there. I can't top this story but I think you will find it humorous. I was working at a con in New Orleans in approx 1997. This was during the Ensign Ro season of Star Trek. One of the members of the Star Trek Club that I belonged to at that time looked just like the actress who played Ro Laren. One night we were watching Star Trek Next Gen episodes where Geordi and Laren were in another dimension and their crewmated thought they were dead. After the episode a young man said it was great that the convention could afford a star like the one who played Ro. I told him that she was not at this convention but had sent us a nice letter saying she had a previous engagement. He was amazed because he had even asked her for an autograph but she refused. 1 and 1 came together and made 2. I told the young guy that the woman he asked for an autograph was my friend who looked like her in makeup. He said " OHHHH. Then she will need a ride. I saw her
on the side of the road before the episode started but I thought she would have a driver come and pick her up." I nearly died laughing. I called my friend and told him to see if he could find our friend. Just as I said this a very upset friend who looked like Ro Laren came into the Star Trek room and just about collapsed into tears. After we heard her story we gave her extra time to change into an extra uniform and she posed with the guy in her Ro Laren makeup. He knew she was a fake but his friends don't know that. LOL.
