I knew SHADO is run as a military
organisation, but I was under the impression that new recruits were given the rank of private..... |
In the US military, if the recruit has a university degree, they are
given an officer rank immediately after basic training; I'm assuming that a similar process happens in the UK. There may also be some other specialties that receive a commission. However, they all attend OBC Officers Basic Course. This is not the same as OCS Officer Candidate School or college ROTC. Ive been involved with "basic training" actually the term is Initial Entry Training for over 10 years and Ive never seen a croot get a commission out of IET. UFO was very fast and loose with its military references, a Lieutenant commanding a base on the moon for example. |

No.... Under some circumstances, if a recruit to the U.S. military has a university degree, depending on his enlistment contract, he might be able to start off his paygrade as an E3 instead of an E1. But there is no such thing as "...giving him an officer's rank immediately after basic training....", not if he's just a regular enlistee. If a person holding a degree enrolls in an officer candidate program and completes it, he can then recieve an officer's commission upon sucessful completion of the program. This is available to any qualified candidate, either a serving enlisted rank member or new entry, however, he must first apply to, enroll in, and successfully complete, an officer candidate school program, something totally different than your basic entry training for regular recruits. O's are paid a bit better than your basic E's, and they come with a lot more vetting and responsibility.
