With university degrees, recruits are given a rank, as far as I know of, as
you've said.

Ranks establish a built-in chain of command within an organization.

I think for TV shows it seems better to have characters with officer ranks rather than enlisted men ranks.

Very true! The only sci-fi series I can remember that don't have the
military involved is X-files and Hero's)

In the US a person is not given an officer Rank until they pass though
Officers Candidate School. My brother-in-law did 6 years as regular crew on a
nuclear sub and he had a BSE degree when he joined. He didn't want to become an
officer because he wanted to get his hands dirty and REALLY know how things are
put together.
