Hi, Yuctar, Worldwide VCRs can always be found for sale on eBay. They usually sell for more than $100 dollars though (more like $400-$500). I suspect we don't have the lower priced models because there is no real market for them. Say, if you run down to Circut City you can pick up the APEX AD-1500 for $79.99, which is an excellent machine for the price. Not only will it play PAL DVDs (and some, but not all, can be hacked to be region and macrovision free), it plays VCDs and SVCDs as well. I've been busily downloading Buffy the Vampire slayer episodes on VCD for a few weeks now. ><siiiiiiiiigh> > >Everything sounds so complicated - I don't think I'll ever be able to >watch PAL videos OR DVDs. And how can you tell if your player can be hacked or not? If this works well, this would certainly be the low-budget way to do it. Marc |

It can play up to 5 (or is it 6?) different regions, switchable from PAL to NCTS on the fly and requires no hacking! I prefer to use a Sima Copymaster to deal with Macrovision and it does a great job. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo! I will have to get a new VCR soon <ponder> Hmmmmmmm. <thinking cap on> > ><siiiiiiiiigh> > > > >Everything sounds so complicated - I don't think I'll ever be able to > >watch PAL videos OR DVDs. > > Is it even more complicated now that I've tossed in a couple more formats > to think about? LOL! Yeah. VCDs can be viewed on a computer without a DVD drive, can't they? I don't know what SVCD is - Super VCD, presumably ... Ah, well, my puter is so slow, probably can't view VCDs on it either. << Better still, buy the Daewoo 500N-3000 for $99. I'm assuming it will work like the AD-600a, with a mild squeezing of the picture from top to bottom. Speaking of which, my DVD drive in my AD-600a just went belly up, so I pulled the DVD drive from my computer and was able to plunk it into the thing, and it works better than it did before (but it doesn't look as nice cosmetically). Instead of buying a new DVD for the computer, I've been considering buying the AD-1500. If the serial number of the AD-1500 starts with an SV or has no letter at all, it can't be easily hacked (requires a firmware chip replacement). If the serial number starts with any other letter of the alphabet, you can hack the firmware by loading an firmware patch via CD. A couple of good sites for information like this are: http://www.vcdhelp.com http://www.nerd-out.com/ Kez |
