Re: Mike B, Peter G. et al

Pam McCaughey
On the subject of wigs, remember Walter Koenig had to wear one when he was
first cast as Chekhov in TOS? He was added to the group ensemble to bring in
the teenie bopper viewers I guess. Today Shatner wears a rather convincing
rug. Sylvia Anderson probably felt if women could wear wigs, so could her
males stars (i.e. Mike and Ed).

I hadn't known Peter Gordeno was clean shaven because of cancer - hope he's
well over it now. Anyone hear about Gary Myers, who played Lew Waterman? I
heard a rumour some time ago he also had cancer (I think he's currently
living in Aussie). Peter G. and Gary M were also favs of mine in UFO. And,
yes, Peter looked magnificent with his head shaven! He's so exotic looking!
I love his eyes.

You must excuse Mike B. for his anti-UFO comments of the past. Look at
Shatner and Nimoy - both bit the Trek hand that fed them and kept their
careers afloat. I don't think it's such a bad thing to be known in S-F
circles as a "hero"!! From what I gather, Mike B. does realize now the
impact UFO had on its growing legion of fans, and is thrilled with their
response to some of his earliest works.

I think it takes exposure to the fan phenomenon for some actors/actresses to
realize the appeal and nostalgia they evoked in those who watched their
shows. Patrick MacNee has always enjoyed the Avengers fans, and seems to
revel in the fun of the fan adulation. I think the secret is not to take
yourself too seriously. Certainly James Doohan loves to go to cons and talk
to the fans about Trek, Scotty, and insult Shatner, ha ha.

Most of these actors/actresses have aged very gracefully, and I figure its a
blend of good genes, a little discreet plastic surgery (Shatner is rumoured
to have gone under the knife), and alot of care about their appearances -
after all, their faces are their fortunes!

I think he is Australian by birth. I can certainly hear an Aussie

No, I didn't know he had cancer. Hope he is well now:-)

There's nothing to excuse. Something inside me knew he'd eventually

I think it's a sort of coming of age for both actor & series? I've
noticed that with nearly every (if not all) sci-fi programmes there
seems to be a definite "life cycle".... at conception they are most
usually futuristic, innovative etc., capturing the public imagination &
drawing in considerable fan attention on the way. Once a series dwindles
and fades from view (maybe to be replaced by a more "futuristic"
programme) the larger amount of fan appreciation often dies & perhaps
these actors may at this point feel uneasy with their past role??
Eventually, the whole thing seems to come full circle, and a series will
then find rejuvenation on the airwaves once again, rekindling old
passions (in it's original fans) and probably picking up some new
recruits along the way! I think it's at this point that both fan & actor
alike develop that all important and enduring endearment for a series
..like UFO.

Lordy, I'm rambling now. Where's my kerplop cushion gone.... ???

I know Grant Taylor died shortly after the completion of UFO as a
series, but does anyone have details on the death of Norma Ronald
supposedly in 1994?

Sadly cancer is very common, particularly after middle age and
I'd guess that it's not an unusually high incidence, even among
a fairly small regular cast :(

Hmmmmm. <drdougjackson scratches her dry scalp> I liked your ramble and
I think there is a definite amount of truth in there. But you might
also want to include those people who have been fans all along and never
cared about the 'life cycle' at all. There are those of us who were
quite put out when we learned all those years ago that a second series
wasn't to be (I'm not talking about the present plans). I know I went
into a depression at the age of 13. My life crumbled for awhile. And I
was in a UFO desert for many years: catching any episode I could whether
it be on video or TV, keeping my ears and eyes open for any signs of
actors and actresses who had appeared on the programme, finding out
if/when UFO would be appearing regularly on the tele. I was always
'keeping the faith'. Sounds kinda corney, obsessed, strange. Yep,
well, I'm the first to admit that. I think I found a big oasis when I
logged on the Internet and found Marc's site and mailing list (fab-ufo
at the time).

As for the 'life cycle', sure, it exists. I'm over the moonbase that
UFO is making an appearance on the Sci-fi channel (but not this
Sunday:-(). I suppose UFO is going to go through a sort of 'flavour of
the month' phase. It will attract many people and I'm sure, in time,
they will go by the wayside. But I'm just not like that when it comes
to UFO. Call me crazy, I don't mind.

Well, seems kind of unlikely that so many people from one cast would get
cancer .....
Like that dreadful movie John Wayne made - the one in which he (badly)
played Ghangis Khan .... That was filmed on the grounds of a former
nuclear test site and a high percentage of people involved in that
eventually dies of cancer .....

In his autobiography, Michael Caine tells about moving into his new

ruining the property values and he was sure he (MC) would stand by the

Apologies, I didn't mean to give the impression that there weren't
people out there who are lifelong fans of the programme because I
realise that there most certainly are. It was more a kind of
personal/general observation from my subconscious, I think. It's
probably been twenty odd years since I last saw the episodes of UFO that
I'm now catching on the sci-fi channel but I'm finding I do have some
vague recollection of the stories as they unfold. Unfortunately (and
probably about half way through the original airing) my father got taken
very ill, suffering a series of heart attacks - after which, life got
kind of turned upside down so that's honestly about the last fluent
thing I can remember about UFO the "first" time around... :(

>I was always

No it doesn't at all. Good on ya. It's dedicated fans like you that keep
the programme "alive" so that 'wayward flock' like me (!!) have
something tangible to come back to.

Maybe, maybe not. Personally, I'm extremely glad to have caught up with
the programmes again after so long, and especially this list and have
made my mind up not to let it slip through my fingers this time

it :)

No need to apologise Diane:-) I think what you wrote was very valid.
There will be interest in UFO whenever it is re-screened and that is
great. But human nature as it is, I'm sure there is a pretty high
percentage of people will jump off the bandwagon once something else
comes along on the tele. That's the way it goes, oh well.
