I'm totally fascinated by anything to do with ancient Egypt, and in fact I'm
going to be going there in Sept 2002 (a trip which includes a 6 day cruise up the Nile - I can't wait!). I placed one of my UFO stories in Egypt too (Shifting Sands on the SHADO Library). Interesting that folks have been discussing Straker in terms of being a Roman, and Foster in terms of being an Egyptian - one could write a neat story about Straker being a reincarnation of Caesar and Foster being a reincarnation of Marc Antony (both of whom fell to the charms of Queen Cleopatra). I don't know how one would work it into the modern day aspect of UFO, but it's worth consideration if you're into the fantasy angle of it all. Hey Stevo - wanna take this assignment on? Pam |
You might consider reading the book by Poul Anderson, "The Boat Of A
Million Years" (TOR 1989), and adapting similar immortality concepts... Then Ed could be as immortal as we all want (expect) him to be and he could BE Caesar too! The book is excellent and contains a cute limerick on page 448 too, but the immortality thing is what I was getting at of course. Glad to be here, I always lurk for a while anywhere I go... just
until I figure out if I am REALLY in the right place or not. Just picture me stepping out from beside (not behind) the drapes wearing my full length black trench and beat up black fedora <smiling pleasantly with an outstretched hand>. I think I AM in the right place. I just could no longer resist piping up when I started bouncing in my chair wanting to throw in comments. I have been assimilated and you know, these implants don't itch nearly as much as I thought they might.<G> I too am one of those who saw UFO in the early 70's and caught some re-runs into the mid 70's. I saw a few of those that SciFi mangled badly and re-ran a couple years ago. I went looking for more UFO and found this place. BTW If the immortality were to work the same way it did in the book then Alec could still worry and Henderson could still be just anxious and abrasive because the immortals in that book could still be killed they just had incredibly good healing abilities and no aging. Immortality would give Ed Straker an incredibly good perspective on humanity and possibly explain some of his coldness, he would have already seen all manner of human suffering, need, joy, success, failure et al. Might be a neat way to explain and work with his seeming remoteness as well as opening up all of history, past present and future to Ed and other immortals that could be part of SHADO. Maybe he's been chasing aliens for centuries and only in the late 20th century has the tech to fight back! His friction with Henderson could very well go back to when they fought over bear skins in an ice cave 14,000 years ago<L>... ...could brainstorm scenarios for hours. Anyway... --- Yuchtar and Amelia: thanks for the welcome. Sorry bunch, had to do it! Heh heh heh! OKay! Something more on-topic then: the latest Denise Felt story's in the library and it's a must! 8-) There! And, lastly, a nice word of advice to James K: If you want to pick a knife fight with a Dave, I'd recommend not to pick on Monsieur Walsh... He's got a couple of big swords... Wouldn't mess with him! ;-) --Over and out |

For a bit more on-topic, I too am building the Monsters in Motion resin recast of the WAVE SkyDiver model. I finished the Sky 1, and I'm in the middle of masking and painting the Diver. But I ran into one little problem-- the resin casting of the hull is as thin as an eggshell in some spots, and I discovered one with my finger as I was sanding! So now I'm in the middle of reinforcing, filling, sanding, filling again and sanding again to fix the damn thing! 8-[ There was a space traveler named Wright Who liked to go faster than light He started one day In a relative way And came back the previous night!
