So Carlton has re-released Thunderbirds on DVD, in a 'digitally remastered'
state, and will Space 1999 in April 2001. Will these also be 'digitally
remastered?' - I have to say I'm not that impressed with the work which
has been done on Thunderbirds.

So when will we see the rest of the Gerry Anderson back catalogue? Captain
Scarlett in 2002 (at the same time as the CGI version?), Stingray in 2003?

And what about the B & W material like Fireball XL5, Four Feather Falls,
Torchy the Battery Boy & The Adventures of Twizzle (does any of this still
exist??).

I know Carlton have also released Space Precinct - which at least gives us
some hope that UFO will follow - but we've just had the DE VHS release so
don't hold you breath.

I would certainly love to see Fireball XL5 on DVD but they may not be
released on DVD until all the colour series have been released first. It
also depends on whether there's a demand for the series.

Actually it's not Carlton who have released the Space Precinct series on DVD
but 'Digital Entertainment', (which I presume who you are referring to as DE
regarding the VHS release). They may be region free, but they lack extra
features like subtitles, and do not have the information programme inside
the box cover. Poor packaging in my opinion. Same price as the Thunderbirds
DVD which have 4 episodes per disc and loads of extra features. Only 2
episodes per disc for Space Precinct. Something's not right here.

The remaining 16 episodes will be released on 4 DVDs (5 - 8) on the 13th of
November.

Hi,

I was a bit concerned after reading some of the correspondence
about the New Improved Thunderbirds here on the UFO list, but
having watched all the DVDs now, I must say my own fears were
unfounded. OK, some of the explosions have been beefed up a
bit, and some of the effects are now in stereo, but all in all
there's nothing that's intrusive or distracting. In fact I
would say that someone unfamiliar with the 'untouched' versions
would be unlikely to notice that it had been tampered with.
For me, there's nothing that detracts from the essential
enjoyment .. what was it that you (or others) were unimpressed
with?

There is one thing I noticed in the video rather than audio
production - I can't remember which episode I'm afraid .. but
in a scene where Thunderbird 2 takes off (I think it's the
episode where the Empire State gets accidentally demolished)
there's a very impressive view from below as it swoops over,
its jets burning up the grass beneath. It just looked a bit
too impressive to have been made in the sixties and I wondered
if it had been added in the 'remastering ..' but even if so,
it is done well enough to fit into the original episode
seamlessly. I can understand why a purist wouldn't want 'new'
bits though.

Actually while we're on this subject again, anyone know if the
remaining episodes are due to be released on DVD ..?

Thanks,
James
