I watched The Matrix on Five last Wednesday night and
I began to think what a UFO movie would be like if it was made by the makers of The Matrix ... I can't say I was mad on the idea of Keanu Reeves as Paul Foster but I did think that Hugo Weaving might make a very good Jackson - his Agent Smith is very sinister-sounding and I think that Weaving as Jackson MIGHT work without an Eastern European accent! What does everybody think? I also thought Weaving might make a good Straker but I'm really sold on the idea of him as Jackson! The Wachowskis would probably cast Lawrence Fishburne as Straker ... imagine a black actor playing Straker! I think this could work, what do you lot think? I think Carrie Ann Moss and the actors who played members of the Nebercanezer's crew would be very good in supporting roles as SHADO opertives, how about Moss as Gay Ellis or Virginia Lake? Or as my favourite, Leila Carlin? Someone mentioned Ralph Fiennes might be good as Straker but I couldn't see Fiennes appearing in a film of a TV series after The Avengers! However, I don't think Fiennes and Uma Thurman were the worst things about The Avengers - Sean Connery and even Jim Broadbent are far worse - and I don't think The Avengers is as bad as it was made out to be, I'm sure a sequel would've ironed out any initial teething problems. Stanley Kubrick did this (used a lot of actors from A Clockwork Orange in Barry Lindon), and this was distracting to me because I kept on thinking about the roles that these actors had played in the other movie. It would be worst with The UFO movie, since a lot of people would be thinking about The Matrix and most likely they will be disappointed. David Levine |
Amazon Japan are now offering the Japanese box set at 21,080 Yen which
I believe iS lower than HMV Japan. They also offer a economy shipping option, which both HMV and CDJAPAN do not. This is substantially cheaper [over a 1000 Yen] than the courier shipping that HMV Japan and CDJAPAN insist overseas customer must use. I have bought a number of CD's from HMV Japan and they used Fedex on all orders and ship very quickly, this is alright when ordering CD's but the cost does ramp up on DVD box sets. The Lunadude |

My thoughts on Laurence Fishburne as Straker. There seems to be a thing in
these remakes of classic series of now casting black actors to play role that were originally played by white actors. Perhaps it has something to do with trying to address the problem of the lack of leading role for black actors in films. I have no problem with it as long as the right actor is picked for the part. In the case of Will Smith in Wild Wild West or Eddie Murphy in I Spy they were the wrong choice. Not because they were black but because they couldn't did play the role seriously straight. Now while Laurence Fishburne is a fine actor and would do a very good job as Straker but he isn't the right actor for the role. Why? For the same reason that Antonio Bandaras, or Chow Young Fat would be wrong. The would look comical in a blonde wig. Straker was not comical. But he was blonde. So change it you say. Sure, but its part of the character. You change that and you might as well change his, determination or drive and then you don't have Straker anymore! James K.
