Sumiton population 2800 and shrinking. I had thought about using the Luke
Skywalker quote to descibe here. Great minds think alike I guess. Since they were using the ATV TV studios for the scenes of Harlington-Starker Studios I guess it would be in the same area which I think is a London suburb. Anyone know exactly where? James K. |
I don't know how big Sumiton is. I know the city in which I live (pop -/+
80,000), Moncton, New Brunswick is such that I like to describe it using Luke Skywalker's comment "If there's a bright centre to the universe, this is the furthest point from it." Has it ever been established just where the Harlington-Straker studio is, in consideration to London? Is it outside in the surrounding rural area, or in a London suburb? Pam |

If you do, James, give us a shout and I can take you to some of the sites in
near-by Watford that were used in Confetti Check A-OK. I should get hold of the Box book re: locations..... Hmmm.... Anyone got that? If you are based in the UK and watch 'Holby City' (a hospital drama), you can see that they also use the exterior of the same building as the front ofthe hospital! Harlington Straker Studios is Neptune House, currently part of the BBC
Elstree complex (the administration building - probably what it was for ATV). It can be seen on British TV as the hospital building in Holby City. As you note, James, it's in Borehamwood, which at one time was a very major centre in TV and film production. There were several studios at Borehamwood/Elstree, of which the ATV studio was just one. UFO was made at MGM studios, where The Prisoner and 2001 were filmed, but it closed down mid way through production - hence the move to Pinewood, and the long break between filming blocks. Of the other Elstree Studios, the one which became Thorn EMI Studios in the seventies (and was where Star Wars and the Indiana Jones films were made) was used in the sixties by most other ITC series, as well as The Avengers. In fact, ITC pretty much kept the studios going, in terms of using production space and production crew. Many film directors such as Freddie Francis, Leslie Norman, and Roy Ward Baker made ITC episodes. >From: James Gibbon <[hidden email]> >Reply-To: [hidden email] >To: [hidden email] >Subject: Re: [SHADO] Re: small towns - where is H-S studio? >Date: Wed, 06 Jun 2001 23:18:02 -0400 > >James wrote: > > > Since they were using the ATV TV studios for the > > scenes of Harlington-Starker Studios I guess it would be in > > the same area which I think is a London suburb. Fanderson produce an excellent guidebook to TV and film locations, with an emphasis on the ITC series (particularly UFO), and The Avengers. Worth getting if you can. I'm hoping that someone produces a version for central London - if no-one does, I may well try... >From: Grant Wray <[hidden email]> >Reply-To: [hidden email] >To: "'[hidden email]'" <[hidden email]> >Subject: RE: [SHADO] Re: small towns - where is H-S studio? >Date: Thu, 7 Jun 2001 09:40:22 +0100 > >If you do, James, give us a shout and I can take you to some of the sites >in >near-by Watford that were used in Confetti Check A-OK. > >I should get hold of the Box book re: locations..... >Hmmm.... I've come to know those places very well in the last few years, and the scenes where they are shown make me wish I could jump through the TV screen and walk around the West End in 1970. James |

Interesting... because I'm pretty sure they used that building as the hospital where Basil and Sybil Fawlty go for their ailments in the infamous "German" episode of Fawtly Towers. It can be seen on British TV as the hospital building in Holby City. What building in the real world was used for film shooting, is one question. Where SHADO Headquarters is in the fictional world of the story, is another question. These two questions may have the same answer, or they may not. |
