Revealling the set

In one episode Straker goes crazy and smashes through his office set revealling the cameras and we then get to see the framework set of skydiver and moonbase, we see everything which somewhat loses the magic and mystery of the show, does anyone know why this was done? why they decided to expose the behind the scenes images,of the actual UFO sets, i found it most surprising and equally disapointing!

It was surprising, but I didn't find it dissapointing.
MINDBENDER is one of my favorite episodes.

I've read that they were running low on budget, and
wanted a "low budget" episode -- one that required
no new sets to be built, and no new special effects
sequences. Just use what you've got. Sometimes
when such a decree is made, you end up with a
"flashback" episode, where they just show a lot
of scenes from previous episodes. And they did
that in MINDBENDER too (Straker seeing his life
on film), but they were much more creative about
it.

Yes, I totally agree, Richard. It's meant to represent a hallucination
of course; the episode you're referring to is 'Mindbender'. However, no
viewer can possibly have watched it without thinking "well, that's the
actual Moonbase set" and so on; the magic and illusion of UFO is
deconstructed before our very eyes. It was an original idea, but one
which failed. Although it's well-regarded by some fans, it's actually a
rather poor episode.

I agree it a very poor episode, and it does deconstruct the "magic",
its a particular episode and a scene that I rather tat had not been
comitted film - to me it smacked of the series running out of ideas.

Mine too, Marc! And since I'm a behind-the-scenes junkie (which is why
I buy all my dvds with special features!), I thought it was awesome to
see the actual sets they worked on! I'd always wondered how they
managed that circular set for the Moonbase command sphere! A really
fun episode!

The only thing I liked about it was Stuart Damon. I liked him in Champions and his two time appearance on Space 1999. Did not like him on General Hospital. Too generic a character in my opinion.

Count me in as another UFO fan who enjoyed watching MINDBENDER. I
didn't find it disappointing at all. I especially like the part
where "Mike" corrected Straker after he called him Paul.

Isn't this nice? Some of the folks here like it, some don't.  
Everybody gets to participate and nobody's left out.

Jean,
I found that to be very true when I did a survey to find out the
favorite episodes of the group a long while ago. Opinions were WIDELY
different! I ended up doing the survey on favorite scenes instead,
since these were easier for people to be definite about liking or
disliking. It's cool to hear everyone's reasons for liking (or hating)
an episode, though, because it gives you a glimpse inside their
thoughts while watching the show.
