Very exciting news about the proposed Region 2 sale of the series on
DVD--let's hope that A & E go ahead with plans to distribute it over here, for the benefit of those of us who DON'T own an APEX DVD player. Does anyone know whether the running time of each episode of UFO was originally set at 50 minutes? I bought 2 of the tapes being sold by Cinema Classics. The visual and sound quality of the shows is very good, but I noticed when I was watching one of the shows that it clocked in at only 46 minutes. I haven't timed the others yet, but it seems as if the source material for the video was derived from a print trimmed for US broadcast ten years ago or so (of course now the standard running time for a US hour show is only 43 minutes--I'm sure we'll see that cut into very soon as the new contracts get firmed up; I just hope they don't go lower than 40 minutes of content in an hour show! Pathetic, isn't it?) Here's my vote for a 3 CD set for the UFO soundtrack. Steve |
hi all,
i was watching a movie this anotther night and not paying real close attention when i said hey that man is familiar. Looking closer it was true...isn't that...I said... none other than Ed Bishop, acting in a new movie. But to make sure i watch the credits and sure enough, there he is and playing a general no less, a confederate general in Paris. It was not a staring role, but he was very effective for the time he was on. i very amused by him. Of course i only been here short time so it may well be known to you but i look up Marcs site and this 1999 movie is not listed there. It was only a fluke i watch it. does anyone know what movie this was? Christo |

>originally set at 50 minutes? Yes -- on the Japanese UFO laserdiscs, every episode is longer than 49 minutes. However, on a video in the PAL format, episodes are typically 47 minutes, because they are sped up by 4% -- the original 24 frame/sec film is transferred to 25 frame/sec video, where in the USA, they repeat frames to keep the speed the same. The episodes sold by Cinema Classics are simply NTSC conversions of the old Polygram PAL videotapes, therefore they are sped up 4% as well. There are not edited -- they are simply sped up. -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |

To make things simple, imagine watching an unedited print at a private screening with the film running at the correct speed. How long would that be? Also, which is closer to the film timing, the NTSC or the PAL version? And while I have your attention, I was thinking that an approach to the UFO CDs like that taken for the Prisoner would be the best way to go. However, another approach which I think is worth considering is..... a DVD audio release! Why not? Some albums are already being released on DVD audio (some in DTS!). I'm sure all the UFO music would fit on one disc. Of course, I don't know how many people have their DVD player hooked up to their stereo. I do, but then again, I was pretty much aiming for that from the start. cheers, Simon ---- Simon Wickes New Jersey, USA |

Most people would need to buy a new DVD audio player .. of course if DVD audio catches on many of us will get them anyway, but that's a way off yet. James |

Maybe a Bastille Day flick? <g> > > Amelia <tearing out her hair about a movie she didn't know Ed was in> Well it had Di-annie Rigg and Matthew Modine in it and was called 'The American'. Ed played one General Packard and my doesnt he have a sparkle in his eye. He certainly can act. It was made in 1998 by Irish Screen Productions, the BBC and WGBH Boston. And well worth a look, a version of a Henry James story i think. chris |

The NTSC version (USA/Japan/Canada) would be nearly identical to the film. The PAL (Europe) version would be 2 minutes shorter. >Why not? Better to stick with CD's... although I'm sure there are people who don't have a CD player either! Marc |
