SHADO Car

Griff
Hi,

I understood Commander Straker's SHADO car was supposedly powered by a gas turbine - in UFO reality that is - not as an Anderson film prop. Also, I suppose it explains the turbine-like sound, and all the air intake vents at the front of the vehicle.

Regards, Griff

Re: SHADO Car

James Killian
Well if we are doing a new title for stuff having to do with the car Griff I can
deal with that and it was really a long one on the bloopers.
If we are talking about upgrading Straker to a new car for 2012 since his
1980 Hirondel(its actually a famous fictional motor car company) is now a
classic but old its time to retire it.  Lightcudder(gee codenames<g>) suggest a
Jaguar sedan which is armor like the Prime Minster is using now.  That would be
okay if he was just a movie excutive but as he is secretly the head of SHADO
that means he's need something with a bit more edge.  To take those twisty
British roads at speed you need a sports car or a sports sedan.  And you can
turn them at those speeds, races drivers do it all the time and so do fighter
pilots who are known for driving fast on the ground.

Okay need to set up some qualifications for the car.  It needs to look good
not like something your maiden aunt would drive.  It needs to be fast, the techs
at SHADO will make it faster after they armor it.  Also might want to rule out
convertible do to the problems of armoring that fabric top.
Here are my top suggestions for a new car for Straker.
1: Bentley Continental GT, it fits his cover and its fast and looks great.
2:Mercedes Benz SLS 63 Supersport, hey it has gullwings like Stakers last
car if thats a point.
    3:Shayton Equilbrium, fast and exotic.
4:Shelby Aero Twin Turbo.  It can and will do the mentioned 400 KPH 412 to
be exact or about 255 MPH.

Re: SHADO Car

Lightcudder
Hi! The Jaguar Sentinel is capable of 0-60 mph in 9 seconds  and a top speed of 120 mph.  ( and its a NICE car!!) It would be as good as any vehicle on these roads. It's sheer weight would be an advantage actually. I dont think speed is the priority here, protection is, and a small sports car would probably not be strong enough to take the armour plating etc.
Its the sort of luxury sports  car Straker would drive (in my humble opinion!)
According to the advert.......The XJ Sentinel offers ballistic protection up to B7 level (BS EN 1522 level FB7 and BS EN 1063 BR7-), blast protection against 15kg TNT equivalent detonated within close proximity of the vehicle, and substantial under floor grenade protection---

Sounds good to me!! ( But then I always liked Jaguar cars!)

SHADO
Shayton Equilibrium?  I second the motion!  It's even vaguely (admittedly, VERY vaguely)reminiscent of Straker's old car, shape-wise.

Re: SHADO Car

James Killian
Gee Lightcudder zero to 60 in 9 seconds would sound impressive if you did not
know that for a long time the bench mark for fast cars going from zero to 60 mph
was that set by the Shelby AC Cobra which was actual a British car the called
the AC Bristol with an America V-8 engine shoehorned into it.  The really big
one which was the 427 cu. in. would go from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds flat.  Less
than half the 9 seconds of the Jaguar Sentinel. By the way I like the looks of
Jaguars too but a Lamborghini Murcielego can can do 200 kph in 9 seconds and if
you really want insult to injury the Toyota Celica GT4 will hit 250 kph or 151
mph in that time. Okay the Jaguar is armored to B7 protection.  However that is
only good for up to 7.62 NATO Armor piercing ammo.  Someone takes a shot at you
with a .338 Lapua or a .50 BMG with non AP ammo and you have a hole in your
Jaguar and our Commander.
What we need is something that can do zero to 60 in under  4 seconds, 3.5 is
getting to be the new benchmark.  And we need something with armor rated at
least B10 if not higher.  Bumpers should be reinforced for ramming.  Also tires
that can take major damage without going flat or run flat tires.

I considered electric cars but no one has yet got one that that has the milage
need between recharges for long distant driving.  And another problem is that
UFO are often reported as having caused batteries in cars to go dead so if you
have a car running on a electric battery system you are in big trouble.

Where are Wankels now? My Dad had a Mazda Rx-3 with the 12A engine back in
'74 and that thing had acceleration and then some. Try 100+ mph down the
freeway and not even realizing it until you looked at the speedo. So the
newer ones should have some killer performance even if the MPG is lousy.

know that for a long time the bench mark for fast cars going from zero to 60
mph

was that set by the Shelby AC Cobra which was actual a British car the
called
the AC Bristol with an America V-8 engine shoehorned into it. The really big

one which was the 427 cu. in. would go from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds flat. Less
than half the 9 seconds of the Jaguar Sentinel. By the way I like the looks
of
Jaguars too but a Lamborghini Murcielego can can do 200 kph in 9 seconds and
if
you really want insult to injury the Toyota Celica GT4 will hit 250 kph or
151
mph in that time. Okay the Jaguar is armored to B7 protection. However that
is
only good for up to 7.62 NATO Armor piercing ammo. Someone takes a shot at
you
with a .338 Lapua or a .50 BMG with non AP ammo and you have a hole in your
Jaguar and our Commander.
What we need is something that can do zero to 60 in under 4 seconds, 3.5 is
getting to be the new benchmark. And we need something with armor rated at
least B10 if not higher. Bumpers should be reinforced for ramming. Also
tires
that can take major damage without going flat or run flat tires.

were all pilots (Foster was a test pilot and Straker would have been in
order to an astronaut then). Slow is so not going to be in their vocabulary.

Re: SHADO Car

Ah, the Mazda RX8.  A real Q ship(that a old term from the military for a ship
that looks like nothing but has hidden speed and weapons which got picked up car
people for a car with hidden power and speed).  The RX8 will do over 200 mph I
have heard top speed is 208 plus so it got potential!  Also know that they make
a hydrogen version so thats something also.  The rotary Wankel engine in these
is suppose to get a major upgrade to something called the RX-16 which is suppose
to put out a lot more horsepower so we could see the next version be in the 250
mph plus club with the other cars we have been toying with for Strakers next
ride.

Well if we are doing a new title for stuff having to do with the car Griff I
can

deal with that and it was really a long one on the bloopers.

If we are talking about upgrading Straker to a new car for 2012 since his

1980 Hirondel(its actually a famous fictional motor car company) is now a

classic but old its time to retire it. Lightcudder(gee codenames<g>) suggest
a

Jaguar sedan which is armor like the Prime Minster is using now. That would
be

okay if he was just a movie excutive but as he is secretly the head of SHADO

that means he's need something with a bit more edge. To take those twisty

British roads at speed you need a sports car or a sports sedan. And you can

turn them at those speeds, races drivers do it all the time and so do
fighter

pilots who are known for driving fast on the ground.

Okay need to set up some qualifications for the car. It needs to look good

not like something your maiden aunt would drive. It needs to be fast, the
techs

at SHADO will make it faster after they armor it. Also might want to rule
out

convertible do to the problems of armoring that fabric top.

2:Mercedes Benz SLS 63 Supersport, hey it has gullwings like Stakers last

3:Shayton Equilbrium, fast and exotic.

The rotary Wankel engine in these
is suppose to get a major upgrade to something called the RX-16 which is suppose
to put out a lot more horsepower so we could see the next version be in the 250
mph plus club with the other cars we have been toying with for Strakers next
ride.

Sweeet! - RX-8 with a sports shell? I mean, Straker, Freeman, and Foster
were all pilots (Foster was a test pilot and Straker would have been in
order to an astronaut then). Slow is so not going to be in their vocabulary.

The 1980s RX7s were awesome - as too the 1990s James Hardie 12hr winning
cars - Porsche killers. Porsche had to release a barebones version to even
get close to the Mazdas.

Perhaps a hydrogen electric hybrid. I have seen a couple of electric and
hybrid
engine cars and when running in electic mode they are very quite and give
quick
acceleration. That would make them very useful for getting about quietly as

long as high speeds were not needed to get where going.

I considered electric cars but no one has yet got one that that has the
milage
need between recharges for long distant driving. And another problem is that

UFO are often reported as having caused batteries in cars to go dead so if
you
have a car running on a electric battery system you are in big trouble.

Gee Lightcudder zero to 60 in 9 seconds would sound impressive if you did
not
know that for a long time the bench mark for fast cars going from zero to 60
mph

was that set by the Shelby AC Cobra which was actual a British car the
called
the AC Bristol with an America V-8 engine shoehorned into it.

I think that's a Delorean Nat.  Its also getting on in years like the original
Straker  car.
In reply to Jim's idea about defenses like missles rather hard to do on
something as small as a car despite what one see in Bond films.  Things you
could have are stuff like a eletroshock door handles and pepper spray to take
out car jackers.  For a UFO attack other than the armor I don't know and not
sure that would resist a laser type weapon.  However another defense I do know
of being put on cars is this stun light that gives off a burst of light so
intense it overloads the optic nerve and causes the persons seeing it to be
temporary blinded and be knocked out.  That might take out the UFO are at least
make it impossible for them to hit the car as you can't hit what you can't see.
