Hey UFO-Heads,
Do you think SHADO really preserved its secret in the "proper" way? I ask you: 1- What episode(s) either humans or aliens were on the verge to discover the real location of SHADO? I only remember 'TIMELASH', but I'm sure there were many other moments. Can you list them, please? 2- Do you think it is plausible that a Colonel of the United States of America suddenly quitted USAF and became a renowed movie producer? Is it plausible as "facade" for the general public out of there? 3- Any special note about the relationship between the general public and SHADO's existence? Ordinary people are not supposed to know about SHADO headquarters, Moonbase and Skydiver(s). Are ARMY and NAVY *NOT* supposed to know, even? What's the only main force behind SHADO? Many thanks, T.C. |

But what about the people who built SHADO HQ, or the SkyDivers, or the Interceptors? This is perhaps the least convincing aspect of the UFO premise, for me. It would be phenomenally cost-ineffective to design and build a handful of SkyDivers just for SHADO. If such a craft could be built, NATO's various navies would have them as well, and that would eliminate the need for subterfuge quite nicely. No need to hide them from the general public; no-one would blink an eyelid at the sight of a SkyDiver taking to sea. James |

I think:
STRANGE! Tha Aliens shouldn't be supposed to know SHADO's Earth location... so, why didn't they simultaneously attacked the studios with hundreds of UFOs? Are you sure about it? If the aliens keep to attack the SHADO location, general public will discover it's not an ordinary movie studio anyway. So I think they don't know... and both CONFLICT and TIMELASH were isolated episodes... I'm confused now. T.C. --- In [hidden email], "Marc Martin" <marc@...> wrote: > > > Didn't they know it anyway? We already do this routinely with large-scale construction, except not for SHADO. Each module is designed and built to be bolted together by relatively unskilled personnel and is faked-up to look like normal stuff. The final modules are real (say, an experimental liquid hydrogen plant that has to be located far away due to the potential of accidents), costs billions of wasted dollars after a few years' "operation" and gets a lot of negative press and scorn for the failure. If "the fate of the planet" is at stake, cost is no object, right? Hmmm, maybe I should refine this concept a bit. Perhaps the abandoned movie studio (remote, but located close to a private airport so that movie stars could arrive without fanfare) gets closed 5 years prior to the SHADO HQ construction. I'm running out of ideas... Paul |

Dear UFO-heads,
I agree with everything you're saying here, but please, HOW the aliens managed to discover the location of the HQ? Hi guys - coming outta lurk for a momento - I am not certain the writers
and/or producers really ever answered the question about the issue of whether the aliens knew where SHADO HQ was actually located. I suspect this was a plot hole they just didn't consider. The thing with UFO is because it was only 26 eps - its rather short on canon. I think those of us who like to do UFO fan fiction have sort of taken it upon ourselves to answer some of those question with our own imaginations - there's certainly tons of scope for doing so. SHADO's location was most definitely known by the Aliens as shown in
several episodes. SHADO was to be kept secret from the masses of the world as it would be feared that there may be mass hysteria if it was found out that Aliens were coming to Earth to harvest us. So really it was keeping itself secret from our world more than the Aliens. In my mind the Aliens had a problem. If they were to totally destroy SHADO then a larger more open force against them may be brought into existence. So they might try to limit SHADO's effectiveness to operate but destroying it outright might work against them. Regards, Barry |
Hector,
That's a real good consideration, I totally agree on this! Congrats. As much as SHADO wants to keep itself "hidden" and "obscure" to human/earthling eyes, the Aliens shouldn't be bothered to uncover their presence to terrestrials. So SHADO has a double duty: to stay in the shadows and to STOP the Aliens to shed light on their own existence! Am I right? Lurking in the SHADOw's! I like that - wonder if that is the
original intention when the series was devised? There are several stories of the show where SHADO are covering up. So SHADO is meant to foil any Alien attempts to land on Earth and also cover up any landings that do occur. Also eliminate either by the amnesia drug or "other" means anyone who isn't a SHADO agent who has knowledge of said occurences... --- In [hidden email], "apecalypsenow" <apecalypsenow@...> wrote: > > Hector, > > That's a real good consideration, I totally agree on this! The AMNESIA drug! And people here is *STILL* wondering how they
built up SHADO without "revealing" it... they made hundred and hundred of workmen take a little bit of AMNESIA as well... Perhaps SHADO HQ should have been built in an underground location that already existed, but was closed to the public - perhaps for safety reasons. Say a tube station, or part of an old underground line. |
I would have thought it within the bounds of reason that SHADO HQ
could have been built without revealing its true nature. Just a couple of years ago it was revealed in the UK that a small underground 'town' had been constructed in Wiltshire during the Cold War, which would have been used in the event of nuclear attack. This only came out many years after it was constructed, and was a secret not known to the public at large. It was though, likely known to the Soviets. (Possible analogy with UFO here?) Admittedly this was built under an existing forces base, so secrecy was easier to assure. However I could imagine SHADO HQ being built by the military under guise of filming a war epic, to explain all the military personnel that may have been around! Regarding the secret construction of the SHADO military assets, again I find some analogy with the construction of the F-117 stealth fighter, whose secret existence was only made public some years after it was in service. --- In [hidden email], James Gibbon <jg@...> wrote: > > On Thu, 16 Nov 2006 21:59:51 -0700 > Paul Bowers <pbowers@...> wrote: > > > James Gibbon wrote: > > > > > But what about the people who built SHADO HQ > > > > You build separate, shop-fabricated modules in various parts of the > > world with different contractors under cover of being a prototype > > process plant (or other ruse).
