SPACE INTRUDER DETECTOR

I'm just curious why SID is called a "Space Intruder Detector" rather than a "Space Invader Detector" or a "Space Invasion Detector." Surely the aliens haven't travelled millions of miles for a mere 'intrusion' like a bunch of party gatecrashers?

Hi,

I suppose it is a matter of semantics.

Occasionally, the aliens attack as singletons or pairs (one or two aliens per UFO), so I think it more correct to call that case an "intruder" or "intruders".

Surely, "invader" and hence invasions have a different connotation. I suppose it is possible to be "invaded" by one individual, but an actual "invasion" implies a large number of "invaders" ... such as say the Vikings.

BTW, Paul Foster's hallucination WAS most certainly gatecrashed by a bunch of alien invaders! If it had happened at Sylvia's party and not the sauna, that would have been one hell of a party, with more than a few hangovers...i.e. OMG, what the he&% did I drink at Sylvia's party... at one point I thought I'd been abducted by aliens... DOH!

Maybe because the intent of the Aliens to invade is not in evidence. They
are not setting up a beachhead or attempting to take over political power or
annex territory, unlike the Visitors in 'V' (BTW - I much preferred the
original 80s series of 'V' to the revival ).

So as the Alien's reasons for violating Earth territory is not invasion, but
the procurement of replacement organs and perhaps other activities, Intruder
is a more correct term.

Much the same as someone trespassing is not necessarily a burglar or home
invader if the intent to steal or usurp your property rights is not the
motivation for the act of trespass.

this day and age? That concept worked in the 1960's, but I'm
not so sure it'll work today.

Is there ever a suggestion that SID can engage in meaningful
conversation? I think SID works more or less like a Sat Nav, in
that it has a vocabulary and grammar strictly limited to its
role.
